PETER QUILLIN: "I DON'T KNOW WHAT WINKY'S MOTIVATION IS...I'LL TUNE HIS ASS UP ALRIGHT"

By Jon Reynoso | April 20, 2012
PETER QUILLIN:

"I actually want some fresh, young, hungry lions that's gonna push me during camp. I am training for an old guy, but I have to prepare for him like he is 21 years old...I don't know what Winky's motivation is when he trains...I don't know if he is gonna wanna hit with the amount of punishment that I plan to be putting on him. When I'm working hard in the gym, it's meant to execute a win and put leather on his ass. I'm not taking nothing less than that. I'ma make sure that this young guy takes that old guy too school. Maybe he is an old veteran that knows that there are young guys looking to beat him. He might think I'm a walk in the park, but I'll be walking him in the park. Iʼll give him his tune-up; Iʼll tune his ass up alright," stated undefeated middleweight contender Peter Quillin, who talked about his upcoming clash with former champion Winky Wright. Check out what else he had to say!

JR: What's going on Pete? You got a big fight coming up. How's training?

PQ: Training has been A1 Steak saucy. When I say steak saucy, that means it's all good. I'm blessed to be in this position and to be able to showcase my talent in front of a whole bunch of people, man.

JR: Talk about the process leading up to the fight. It was kind of confusing to some fans that donʼ't understand the business.

PQ: Alright, well, a guy like me always goes to the gym and works out, you know what I'm saying? So I hit the gym, I go work out, you know what I mean; I just let my managers and all those people get to all the fights that are being made and everything. The fight was supposed to get made for May 5th on Floyd Mayweather's undercard. That would have been a huge, huge card for me to be on and I would have loved to be part of the card, but unfortunately, the athletic commission in Vegas wouldn't allow Winky Wright to get a license, so what that did was put the fight out, but there were other places that were willing to accept the fight.

JR: Like you said, the fight was supposed to happen May 5th, but that got pushed back. I know that you're a fighter that trains all year round, but when did you really start to turn it up in training?

PQ: When I came to California. When I got to California, I just basically jumped into that mentality as if I was already here. Before, I was able to spar some rounds with Andre Dirrell and then Carl Froch, so I was working, you know what I mean? It wasnʼ't like I was too much out of shape. I just tuned up to were I need to be. I been in California for about a month and a half. We still got a lot of time until the fight, but I'm ready.

JR: Youʼve been training at the Wild Card gym for a little while now. How's the sparring been with the other competition in that gym?

PQ: The level of competition I've been sparring is like on a level where it's either top level fighters or on the cusp of making a lot of noise, so you always got to be on your A game when you walk up in there. I'm waiting to see what my trainers got in store for me. I'm waiting on Freddie to really see who they are going to bring in. I actually want some fresh, young, hungry lions that's gonna push me during camp. I am training for an old guy, but I have to prepare for him like he is 21 years old.

JR: When I look at Winky's style, I see a guy who has good defense, but a fighter that you will have a lot of time to throw punches against. Do you see it that way?

PQ: Yes, I see it that way. Any time, a great defense can be broken down by a great offense, you know? I don't know what Winky's motivation is when he trains, but I know that I'm motivated because I want to be a world champion. I want a Corvette. I want a lot of shit. I want to take my brother's kids to Disney World. Excuse my language, but these things is what boxing potentially provides for me, you know? I get motivated off of shit like that. That's why I try to work harder than anyone in that motherfuckin'ʼ gym. I want to give my fans a lot too, to those that been following my career since day one, and then boom, see me becoming a world championship title holder.

JR: Winky is battle tested, but with all his experience, do you think that your power will surprise him?

PQ: Yes, I think it will. That's the number one thing. Once you punch somebody, that whole game plan that they mapped out changes when they get hit. I don't know if he is gonna wanna hit with the amount of punishment that I plan to be putting on him. Iʼll give him his tune-up; Iʼll tune his ass up alright.

JR: Alright Pete, keep training hard. Is there anything left you want to say to the fans?

PQ: I want to thank those real boxing people out there. I want to thank FightHype.com for catching the latest and greatest on me. I'm very happy. I'm very motivated. I know the fans want a good fight from me and I'm working hard to give it to them. Whenever I step in the ring, I'm giving my fans 100 percent; nothing but hard work goes into this. The job is never gonna be done because once you become world champion, you got guys that want to retire you, so I'm looking at trying to secure my legacy in boxing. I couldn't talk that early in boxing about legacy, but now it seems more evident that if I stay focused, I could be amongst one of the greats in the world, man. No amount of money can buy that for you. Also, my fans can follow me on Twitter at @KIDCHOCOLATE. I'm always out there tweeting about boxing and being real with my fans. I always try to give them all the insight into my career.
