"Thank you to everybody for spending your hard earned money on PPV last weekend. 1.5 million on PPV is amazing. I appreciate your support," stated undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather, who is clearly pleased about the news of his Cinco de Mayo showdown with Miguel Cotto reaching 1.5 million pay-per-view buys. Mayweather expressed his enthusiasm via Twitter, thanking fans for making the event the second highest grossing non-heavyweight pay-per-view in boxing history.
The event, which thus far has generated $94 million in revenue, is second only to Mayweather's 2007 Cinco de Mayo clash with Oscar De La Hoya, which holds the all-time record of $137 million from 2.4 million pay-per-view buys. Although the final tally is not complete, the 1.5 million buys for his bout with Cotto surpasses the 1.4 million buys ($78 million in revenue) he did against Shane Mosley and the 1.25 million buys ($78.4 million) he did against Victor Ortiz. In fact, according to HBO Sports, in nine headlining events on HBO pay-per-view, Mayweather has generated 9.6 million buys and $543 million in revenue.
