According to Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, the "f*in' real truth" as to why the long-awaited mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao has yet to be made is because unlike Pacquiao, nobody controls Mayweather, and those that work closely with him, namely Al Haymon and Richard Schaefer, are simply using their relationship with him as leverage with the networks in order to make the fights they want to make. In other words, Arum is suggesting that because Haymon and Schaefer don't control Mayweather or make an exorbitant amount of money off of his fights, they use Mayweather's name to convince the networks to give them dates when they can stage other money-making events.
"Like Pacquiao and Mayweather, we had that whole drug test thing nonsense. We had a contract; the contract, every point was agreed to except the drug test. Then finally we took that off the table, that went away, and now still we can't get the thing done because there's more bullshit. Now it's the split, now it's this, now it's that. I think the real problem is, the real problem here is they don't control their fighter," Arum explained to a select group of reporters on hand in New York during a press conference to promote the September 15th clash between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sergio Martinez. "The fighter is the one who's out there listening to people. $200 million from this Sheik, $250 from this; he's like, his head has been crazy and they don't control him, so they have to, you know, take positions that appeal to Floyd because there's dissension in the camp."
As far as Arum is concerned, contrary to popular belief, the fact that Pacquiao has him as a promoter makes it that much easier to get a deal done. "With us, we're Pacquiao's promoter. I clear things with Pacquiao, Michael Koncz, and then I know what position I can take, so I can make a deal on a Pacquiao/Mayweather fight in 5 minutes; in 5 minutes. There's no issues as far as I'm concerned," Arum continued. Of course, he failed to mention that because he's Pacquiao's promoter, unlike Haymon and Schaefer, he actually does make an exorbitant amount of money off of his fights, leaving the 8-division world champion with less money than what Mayweather makes per fight. But I digress.
"Let me tell you what the fuckin' real truth is. Alright, I, with Pacquiao, put up my own money. I'm a promoter and make money based on the fight. Haymon and Schaefer don't. Haymon and Schaefer want their position with Mayweather because they don't make any money to speak of from his fights, so they can use that position as leverage with the networks to get stuff that has nothing to do with Mayweather, and that's how they preserve it," Arum added.
