Undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather has officially revealed that he will defend his WBC welterweight title against interim titleist Robert Guerrero when he makes his highly-anticipated return to the ring on May 4. The bout will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and will be broadcast live on Showtime Pay-Per-View. Mayweather is returning to the welterweight division after moving up in weight last May, when he won a unanimous decision victory over Miguel Cotto to capture the WBA jr. middleweight title.
Guerrero himself is coming off of an impressive and dominant victory over former welterweight champion Andre Berto, who he dropped two times early in their fight en route to a unanimous decision victory. Prior to that performance, Guerrero had been lobbying hard for an opportunity to face Mayweather, even before making his welterweight debut back in July of 2012. "I'm a five-time world champion in three different weight divisions. I'm a 5'9" lefty and everyone says he has trouble with lefties. This is his chance to show the world. I've won world titles, defending them a number of times. He isn't getting a guy that's only had one world title fight. He'd have an experienced fighter in front of him and also a big fighter. I'm Mexican-American and I talk English and Spanish. It's Cinco de Mayo weekend and that's where it's at. I have a compelling story to sell," Guerrero would tell FightHype's own Mike Juhas in December of 2011. "Everybody knows the story about my wife and how she battled cancer. I left a world championship to go attend to her and make sure she was healthy, and then I came back and won three more world titles. Everything is setup right there to make a big fight...When it comes down to it, I take care of business. If it comes down to having to go to Floyd's gym, that's what I'll do."
In addition to the announcement of Guerrero as Mayweather's next opponent, Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe revealed that the fight will take place on Showtime Pay-Per-View.
