"I smashed right through that defense like nothing," stated interim WBC champion Robert Guerrero, who shared his opinion about the elusive shoulder roll defense utilized by undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather, who he faces on May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. During a recent conference call held for select members of the media, Guerrero discussed his most recent encounter with a similar, though far less experienced, defensive style employed by Andre Berto. In that fight, Guerrero easily blasted through the guard of Berto, finding a home for his left hand early and ultimately dropping Berto two times en route to his unanimous decision victory.
"It's knowing how to switch gears, and knowing how to change up, and having the right timing and knowing what to do with the style," Guerrero explained. "A lot of people don't really know what to do with the style and that's what happens to them; they get caught up into his type of defense and getting countered instead of worrying about taking care of business." That being said, there's a huge difference between Andre Berto, who had never before even attempted that style of defense in a fight, and Floyd Mayweather, who has perfected the shoulder roll for nearly his entire life. Come May 4th, it'll be interesting to see if Guerrero is indeed able to smash right through Mayweather's defense as easily as he was able to against Berto.
