Moments ago, at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, hard-hitting top jr. welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse blasted IBF jr. welterweight champion Lamont Peterson, dropping him three times en route to a 3rd round stoppage. Peterson started the fight boxing from the outside, but Matthysse patiently stalked and closed the distance by the end of the 1st round. Matthysse quickly turned up the pressure in round 2, roughing up Peterson on the inside as he began to inch closer with big shots that were just missing their mark.
With about a minute left in the round, a straight right hand landed that rocked Peterson. Matthysse would then follow that right hand with a left hook that put Peterson down for the first time in the fight. In the 3rd round, Peterson was dropped again by a short left hook. Although he was able to beat the count, it was clear that he would not be able to recover and the end was near. Matthysse jumped right on him and landed one more left hook that sent Peterson crashing to the canvas again, prompting the referee to call a halt to the fight at 2:14 of round 3.
