Sources close to the information have informed us that a deal has been reached for a mega-fight showdown between undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and undefeated jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. The bout will take place on September 14, the coveted weekend of Mexican Independence Day, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and televised live on Showtime Pay-Per-View. Although all of the details still remain unclear at this point, we're told that it will indeed be a jr. middleweight unification bout.
Mayweather is coming off of a dominant lopsided unanimous decision victory over top contender Robert Guerrero earlier this month. Although he was defending his WBC welterweight [147 lbs.] title in that bout, Mayweather also holds the WBA "super" jr. middleweight [154 lbs.] title, which he won in May of 2012 when he defeated former champion Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision. Alvarez, the reigning WBC jr. middleweight champion, also picked up a form of the WBA title when he defeated the previously undefeated "regular" champion Austin Trout via unanimous decision this past April. If it sounds confusing, all that really matters is that, as previously stated, the bout will take place in the jr. middleweight division and both the WBC and WBA titles will reportedly be on the line.
Mayweather himself confirmed the news of FightHype's story moments ago when he tweeted: "I chose my opponent for September 14th and it's Canelo Alvarez. I'm giving the fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand." We've also just been informed that both sides agreed to face each other at a weight of 152 pounds.
