"This would be his first fight on pay-per-view, if it works out with Julio, and it's something that he's always looked forward to in fighting Julio," stated Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions, who recently confirmed to FightHype.com that the tentatively scheduled July 19 showdown between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will indeed be taking place on HBO Pay-Per-View if negotiations are finalized. According to Loeffler, despite the fact that Golovkin will be forced to fight out of his comfort zone in the 160-pound division, it's an opportunity that he could not pass up.
"He's clearly gonna continue to campaign in the middleweight division, but getting a fight with Chavez Jr. is one of the biggest fights that we could have on our radar. And in order to get that opportunity to fight Chavez, there is a lot of concessions that we would have to make and weight was one of them," Loeffler explained during a recent conversation with FightHype's Percy Crawford. "He gets some of the highest ratings on HBO, so there is really no reason for him to move out of his natural division when there are so many other great matchups at middleweight except if there was a pay-per-view fight."
