"September 13th, back to business. Marcos Maidana-Floyd Mayweather part 2, and then in May, I'm fighting in May and I'ma have a big suprise for y'all," stated undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather, who revealed his next opponent during an appearance on BET ahead of the 2014 BET Awards. The news probably doesn't come as much of a surprise considering that Mayweather virtually guaranteed Maidana a rematch during the post-fight press conference shortly after their first encounter last month.
Though Mayweather earned a majority decision after two out of the three judges scored it 117-111 and 116-112 in his favor (the third judge scored it 114-114), there are many who felt the fight was close after Maidana put up a much more competitive effort than expected. This will be the second time in Mayweather's career that he's given the same person another shot at his undefeated record, the first being an immediate rematch with Jose Luis Castillo back in 2002 after some disputed his initial victory over the former lightweight champion.
It's unclear if the fight has actually been finalized, but these latest comments make it obvious that Maidana is the direction that Mayweather wants to go in. Although no official details about the fight have been released, we're told that a multi-city press tour could kick off during the week of July 14. There's also no word yet on whether or not the fight will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as there's rumblings that it could be headed to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
