"The thing with Cotto, I just talked to him last night, December 7th, he will be in my gym and we will start working just to get a little head start on what we look forward to," stated Freddie Roach, world-class trainer of Miguel Cotto, who recently revealed that in roughly two weeks, the WBC middleweight champion will be heading out to Hollywood, California, where the two will reunite at the Wild Card Boxing Club to get an early start on training as they begin preparations for their next challenge.
Although an opponent has yet to be solidified, Cotto and his team are currently in the early stages of negotiations for a potential clash with former jr. middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Alvarez's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, is hoping to stage that fight on May 2, the weekend of the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, but that idea might hit a snag depending on the plans of undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather, who has fought on that very same weekend for the past four years. Furthermore, Cotto himself may prefer to fight in June during the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.
Given that both dates are still 5-6 months away, it's interesting to see that Cotto plans on returning to training so early. It's unclear a this point if he's just shaking the rust off or if he's planning a potential tune-up some time prior to May or June. Either way, it's a good to hear that the 34-year-old is still that dedicated to his craft.
