LEE SELBY HEADS TO LA TO SCOUT SANTA CRUZ VS. MARES: "IT IS IMPORTANT TO WATCH POTENTIAL OPPONENTS IN THE FLESH"

LEE SELBY HEADS TO LA TO SCOUT SANTA CRUZ VS. MARES:

IBF Featherweight Champion Lee Selby along with his brother Andrew and manager Chris Sanigar will fly out to Los Angeles today in order to be ringside for the highly anticipated clash between undefeated star Leo Santa Cruz and three division world champion Abner Mares.

Selby will have a keen eye on both boxers Saturday night as there is the potential to face both in the near future.

"Both Mares and Santa Cruz are advised by Al Haymon so I definitely think that I can fight one or both of them over the next 12 months. The fight between them will be all action as both are Mexican warriors and I'm still on the fence about who's going to win."

"I feel it is important to watch potential opponents in the flesh, ringside you can get a better understanding of the boxer than on TV. I did the same before I challenged Gradovich for the world title travelling to Omaha to watch him fight Jayson Velez. After the fight we plan on staying in LA for a week for some top quality sparring."

Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs), a three-division world champion, will be after his fourth straight victory since losing his 126-pound title to Jhonny Gonzalez in August 2013.

Mares, 29, won a 118-pound championship in August 2011 by beating Joseph Agbeko, a 122-pound title in April 2012 with a unanimous decision over Eric Morel and became a champ at 126 with a ninth-round stoppage of Daniel Ponce de Leon in May 2013.

Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KOs), a former titleholder at 118 and 122 pounds, made his 126-pound debut in May, winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Jose Cayetano in Las Vegas.

He defended his 122-pound championship four times after winning the title in August 2013 with a third-round KO of Victor Terrazas in Carson, California.

Now Santa Cruz looks to make a statement at 126 against Mares, who won a 10-round unanimous decision over Arturo Santos Reyes in March.
