When news first broke that Canelo Alvarez will be defending his middleweight title against former world champion Amir Khan, many assumed that there might be trouble brewing between Khan and his influential advisor Al Haymon. After all, Golden Boy Promotions is currently suing Al Haymon, so the idea of them negotiating a fight of this magnitude seemed unthinkable. And after select members of the media made it a point to state that "Haymon had noting to do with" the deal, a press release from Golden Boy Promotions only added more fuel to the speculation when it stated, "Golden Boy Promotions will exclusively promote the fight, with Khan returning to his former home at Golden Boy Promotions for the showdown." Contrary to those reports, however, a source close to the information has informed us that Amir Khan is still signed with Haymon and there is no long-term deal in the works with Golden Boy Promotions.
"There's no long-term deal. It's one fight and a rematch clause, that's it," our source tells us. Khan himself also confirmed his allegiance to Haymon shortly after the fight announcement when he thanked him in a tweet that read, "Wow! Incredible response and fantastic support, thank you everyone, couldn't have done it without my team and Al Haymon." In fact, it is our understanding that Haymon was very much involved in finalizing the deal. Although he did not speak directly with any representatives of Golden Boy Promotions, we're told that Haymon worked directly with representatives of Team Khan, who in turn relayed information to him as negotiations were taking place. To make a long story short, if you thought that Amir Khan was no longer working with Al Haymon, or that Al Haymon would not make a fight with Golden Boy Promotions, think again. On the contrary, Haymon has once again done what he's always done; secured the biggest and best possible deal for his fighter despite any animosity directed towards him. As the saying goes, if it makes dollars, it makes sense.
