MAGNO'S BULGING MAIL SACK: CANELO-GOLOVKIN FALLOUT

MAGNO'S BULGING MAIL SACK: CANELO-GOLOVKIN FALLOUT

My head is spinning with all the emails I got this week after last Saturday’s middleweight “super fight.” But no amount of head spinning can stop me from grabbing my sack! So, here’s the best of the best and the worst of the worst (going in order from very best to very worst):

Good

Hi Paul,

I agree with a lot of your post-fight prognostications, but thought that GGG won 7-5.

Canelo fought well in spots but wasn’t consistent in my opinion.

GGG is struggling to make weight because he’s 35, he should’ve moved up 2 years ago. But it’s tougher for him at 168.

IF Canelo opts out of fighting GGG next in a rematch, who can Canelo fight? It only gets worse for him – Jermall Charlo and Daniel Jacobs are waiting in the wings and I don’t think those are fights Canelo can win.

Even if Golden Boy matches him against David Lemieux that’s a tough fight.

Maybe they’ll match Canelo against Curtis Stevens.

Canelo’s next fight will be a tuneup, they need to restore Canelo’s aura of superiority.

-- Robert Jackson

Hi Robert. If Golden Boy has Alvarez face anyone but Golovkin next, they will be buried in negative press and we’ve seen that, despite what some may think, Canelo is very influenced by fan and media laments. That doesn’t mean that they WON’T try to get a tune-up, pocket-filler next, but it’ll be an extremely hard sell. I think Canelo-Lemieux is an instant classic and way too good for an “in between” fight. Canelo-Stevenson is good. The cynic in me says that Canelo-Margarito is dwelling somewhere in the darkest recesses of some matchmaker’s soul.

As for Golovkin, well, he was clearly the naturally bigger man in the ring last Saturday. Everything about the fight smacked of it being a case of a good bigger man against a good smaller man. But, like you said, Golovkin will have a tough time against larger fighters who can handle his power better.

Honestly, at this point, I think both fighters need each other now. Golovkin isn’t about to move up and neither Triple G nor Canelo is going to volunteer to face guys like Charlo and Jacobs.

Pretty Good

I’m confused. I thought Canelo was supposed to be scared to death of GGG and then I thought GGG was gonna knock him out within three or four. What’s wrong with all these expert fans and media? These cats are jokes and I’m glad there’s at least one person writing about boxing who can see through their bullshit.

-- Antonio Brown

Hi Antonio.

You have to understand that when the “right” fighter comes along and tickles the right spot in fans’ and media’s nether regions, reality become easily distortable.

As I wrote elsewhere back when the hysteria was at the Marco Antonio Rubio stage:

“The affable Kazakhstan native gets the free pass on a woeful overall level of competition because he is, basically, the living embodiment of fight fans’ greatest macho boxing fantasies.

He’s the smiling assassin with the flawlessly efficient offense. He only exists to kick ass and scare all the sissy millionaire champions into hiding. Golovkin is what boxing would be if written and cast by adolescent boys– or, frustrated middle-aged boxing scribes with waning testosterone levels.

Golovkin’s free pass is due in great part to a media that is not shy in showing their absolute fawning adulation of the man.”

Team Golovkin has played their ticket well and has created the type of aggressively loyal and blind fan base not seen since the glory days of Manny Pacquiao’s Pacland. At this point, Golovkin can do no wrong in any of their eyes and anyone unfortunate enough to be tied to Triple G as an opponent, will NOT be getting any benefit of any doubt in their eyes.

Of course, that evens out in the long run since Canelo, as the bigger money generator, will get the benefit of most doubts from judges and commissions.

Still Pretty Good

HI Magno. Love your articles and the way you just don’t give an F (haha). But I do disagree with your take on the scoring. I though Golovkin won at least 7 rounds, maybe 8. But that’s just my own selective opinion.

My question for you is—what’s next? How do you see a rematch going and will the rematch even happen any time soon?

Thanks again for keeping it real all these years.

-- Bradley R

As I wrote above, I think both fighters really NEED one another now, so I think Part 2 happens next.

As for how a rematch plays out—I see it a lot like the Andre Ward-Sergey Kovalev return bout.

In Ward-Kovalev I, Ward did well boxing, but clearly could not hurt a forward-moving Kovalev. Because of this, the fight looked like a bigger fighter hunting smaller prey—and it influenced the way many people scored the fight.

In Ward-Kovalev II, the smaller fighter, Ward, had gained confidence from being able to handle the larger fighter’s much heavier hands. And that confidence seemed to help Ward execute an even sharper and more coherent game plan.

I see Canelo-Golovkin II playing out similarly. Canelo now knows he can take Golovkin’s best shots and he knows what works to nullify Golovkin’s best attributes. The task will become much easier in training for Triple G the second time around. Generally speaking, offensive dynamos tend to be much more beatable the second time around.

Bad

Of course you agreed with the draw. You are a biased piece of shit who hates the white man and will always find fault in white fighters so you can push your racist agenda. You found the right site for your garbage prejudice. That’s for sure. Fight Hype is the Black Lives Matter of boxing. Lying, thieving, race rioters. Have fun in your filth.

Wow, that was extra stupid. And how swell that you saw fit to share this stupidity with the world!

By the way, you do know that Golovkin isn’t “white,” right? Technically, he’s Asian. Does FightHype hate Asians? I can’t recall if the company memo said we had to hate Asians or not. I’ll get back to you on that.

Worse

A Mexican supporting a Mexican! You are trash!

I’m only half-Mexican, but I get your point.  #MAGA

The Absolute Worst

Mango your [sic] an arrogant, full of shit fake of a boxing writer. You know who won that fight and your [sic] so biased you can’t admit it. Golovkin is the real champ and the pound 4 pound number 1. Your [sic] worth less than a pimple on the ass of the middleweight champ.

Well, wasn’t this a pleasant little turd to find in my inbox on a Tuesday morning? The only question I have is this—just how much IS a pimple on Golovkin’s ass worth? Because I think maybe I AM worth less.
