Moments ago at Wembley Stadium in London, England, unified WBA, IBF, & WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua made a successful defense of his title, defeating game challenger Alexander Povetkin via 7th round stoppage. Joshua was tested early in the fight after Povetkin landed a solid upperct that bloodied the nose of the champion. As Joshua looked to keep the fight at a distance, Povetkin repeatedly had success timing him with leaping hooks and overhand rights.
Despite the early difficulties, Joshua stuck to his game plan as he attempted to keep Povetkin at bay behind h is jab. By the middle rounds, the fight was close as both men had success landing good shots. In the 7th round, however, the tide quickly changed. A right hand from Joshua rocked Povetkin and follow-up barrage of punches dropped him for the first time of the fight. Povetkin struggled to make it to his feet after nearly being knocked out of the ring. As the fight continued, Joshua wasted no time in jumping on him and another devastating left hook followed by a straight right rocked Povetkin again, prompting the referee to call a halt to the assault.
