"After this specific showing of Chavez, it was a good fight for him, we're waiting now for the WBC to make a final decision in the next few days of whom he will fight because Martinez is in the mandatory position. The WBC will make a decision of what will be the next move, and on October 1, Sergio Martinez will fight on HBO. That was confirmed yesterday by Ross Greenberg...When Bob says that he's not pay-per-view quality, it's a shame on him. I will prove to him that Sergio Martinez is pay-per-view quality. He needs one more fight in October and then you will see. And if we see Chavez vs. Martinez, we will see equal or even bigger numbers than it was for Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley...If Mayweather really wants to come back and try Martinez, I can guarantee you it will pass the 1.3 million easily if it's early next year," stated Sampson Lewkowicz, world-renowned adviser of middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who talked about Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.'s recent victory and how it relates to Sergio Martinez's next move. Check out what else he had to say about Chavez Jr., Floyd Mayweather, and much more.
MJ: Hi Sampson, great to talk to you again. So what are Sergio Martinez's plans for the immediate future?
SL: After this specific showing of Chavez, it was a good fight for him, we're waiting now for the WBC to make a final decision in the next few days of whom he will fight because Martinez is in the mandatory position. The WBC will make a decision of what will be the next move, and on October 1, Sergio Martinez will fight on HBO. That was confirmed yesterday by Ross Greenberg.
MJ: What did you think of Chavez's performance?
SL: It was the best fight of his career against a very crafty European-style champion. It was very good, a close fight, but it showed he has the character of his father.
MJ: I was impressed with him too. What do you think the chances are that Chavez will fight Martinez next?
SL: Well, it's really up to the WBC, and then Bob Arum because Lou DiBella will take the fight in a heartbeat, as well as Martinez.
MJ: If that fight is not able to happen, do you have a plan B right now?
SL: We're working on a plan B with DiBella, and I want to put this on record. I'm very disappointed with the way that it was referred from Bob Arum to my promoter, Lou DiBella. It was uncalled for and unjustified because Lou DiBella didn't take Sergio Martinez from anyone. I brought him to Lou and together, we've built him to the position he's in today. When Bob says that he's not pay-per-view quality, it's a shame on him. I will prove to him that Sergio Martinez is pay-per-view quality. He needs one more fight in October and then you will see. And if we see Chavez vs. Martinez, we will see equal or even bigger numbers than it was for Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley.
MJ: Have you heard the numbers for Pacquiao vs Mosley?
SL: It was 1.3 million.
MJ: Have you had the chance to talk with Floyd Mayweather? Will we ever get to see Martinez vs. Mayweather?
SL: If Mayweather really wants to come back and try Martinez, I can guarantee you it will pass the 1.3 million easily if it's early next year.
MJ: Certainly. Do you think Mayweather will be interested or do you think he will avoid Martinez?
SL: I believe Mayweather is a great champion. I've never seen him refuse to fight anyone. He's a real man and he will take the fight.
MJ: I know Martinez will take the test.
SL: Martinez will take everyone, anyone, from 154 to 160. He will take every fighter that wants to fight him if there's money involved; the ones that can represent something for him.
MJ: Would he be willing to take the drug testing for Mayweather?
SL: Yes! This kid has never in his entire life taken any beer, wine, alcohol, cigarette, or drug. Why should we not take the test?
MJ: Gotcha.
SL: That is the reason he's a young 36-year-old. Martinez is an example to other fighters of a healthy body and healthy mind. You don't celebrate with champagne.
MJ: I would say the same thing goes for Bernard Hopkins as well.
SL: He's another great example.
MJ: It's too bad they're not closer in weight; that would be a great fight.
SL: Bernard Hopkins has proven himself that with a healthy body and healthy mind, you can keep fighting at a championship level, even at age 46.
MJ: Would a fight with Hopkins at a catchweight interest Martinez?
SL: No because I'll say it again, it has to be 154 to 160. If Bernard wants to come to 160, he's welcome.
MJ: Is anything else coming up with any of your other fighters?
SL: I have Javier Fortuna, who had an excellent showing in my home country of Uruguay. He's now a contender and I expect him to be the next Maravilla. He's with the same trainer and culture as Martinez, no drugs, no alcohol, and I believe in the next year, Fortuna will be the next star of the boxing world.
MJ: It was great talking to you, Sampson. Is there anything else you'd like to say to the FightHype.com fans?
SL: Thank you again for the opportunity to be on your site.
