GARY SHAW: "IT IS OFFICIAL...CHAD BEATS HOPKINS"

By Jon Reynoso | June 13, 2011
GARY SHAW:

"Yeah, first of all, it is official. It's going to be a good fight. I think Chad beats Hopkins; always felt that way. I think you'll see that fight in October or November of this year...I think he'll stand in there. He's not afraid of Hopkins. He's wanted Hopkins for a lot of years. He'll be aggressive under Manny Steward and, you know, it's a work in progress, but I think you're going to see a new Chad Dawson," stated promoter Gary Shaw, who gave us an update on the status of a showdown between WBC light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and former champion Chad Dawson. Check out what else he had to say about the future plans of Dawson, Andre Dirrell, Timothy Bradley and much more.

JR: Gary, can you explain to us what happened with the Timothy Bradley and Amir Khan fallout?

GS: Nope, because any time you offer someone $1.4 million versus an 80-20 split, which would bring him over $2 million and 50% of all the pay-per-view in England, when somebody turns it down, I can't explain it.

JR: Obviously Amir Khan has moved on to fight Zab Judah. How do you think that fight will play out?

GS: It's a real good fight. Zab's a five-time world champion; good friend of mine. He didn't get the same deal that Bradley was getting, but nevertheless, you know, it's going to be a great fight. I don't know who wins that fight.

JR: With you still being Timothy Bradley's promoter, are you looking forward to matching him up with the winner of that fight in the future?

GS: No. If he didn't take it for what it was worth now, you know, I don't know what would make him take it. I would assume we'll be in litigation, he and I.

JR: The fight between Chad Dawson and Bernard Hopkins, is that close to becoming official?

GS: Yeah, first of all, it is official. It's going to be a good fight. I think Chad beats Hopkins; always felt that way. I think you'll see that fight in October or November of this year.

JR: What kind of fight are you expecting out of Dawson?

GS: I think he'll stand in there. He's not afraid of Hopkins. He's wanted Hopkins for a lot of years. He'll be aggressive under Manny Steward and, you know, it's a work in progress, but I think you're going to see a new Chad Dawson.

JR: Carl Froch recently made some critical statements about one of your other fighters, Andre Dirrell, saying it was an easy fight for him. How do you feel about those statements and what is upcoming for Dirrell?

GS: Well, I don't think it was an easy fight. I think he [Froch] won the fight because it was in England. If it was over here, he would have lost the fight. I have nothing against Froch. He's a fine fighter. He fought a very very good fight against Glen Johnson. It's going to be a tough fight for him against Andre Ward. I believe Andre Ward beats him and then Dirrell will be there, you know, and hopefully we fight the winner.
