STEVE CUNNINGHAM: "ME AND MY TEAM ARE CONSIDERING THE MOVE TO HEAVYWEIGHT"

By James Alden | June 30, 2011
STEVE CUNNINGHAM:

"Camp went great. I was there for about three weeks. Wladimir looked great in camp. He is very focused on this fight...Steel sharpens steel. Me and my team are considering the move to heavyweight and sparring with Wlad has made me more comfortable with the idea...I think that Haye could be underestimating Wlad's skills. He's very athletic and of course strong. I think it will be a great fight though. There is a lot on the line and I don't see the fight going the distance," stated IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham, who recently returned home after helping IBF & WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko prepare for his unification bout this Saturday with WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. Check out what else he had to say about sparring with Wladimir, his own future plans, and much more.

JA: How's everything going with yourself, Steve?

SC: Everything is great, thanks.

JA: You helped out Wladimir in training for his fight against David Haye. How is Wladimir looking in training and what are some of the things that you helped him with?

SC: Camp went great. I was there for about three weeks. Wladimir looked great in camp. He is very focused on this fight.

JA: As a fighter, how has working with Wladimir helped you become a better fighter?

SC: Steel sharpens steel. Me and my team are considering the move to heavyweight and sparring with Wlad has made me more comfortable with the idea.

JA: What are your thoughts on the David Haye vs. Wladimir Klitschko fight?

SC: I think that Haye could be underestimating Wlad's skills. He's very athletic and of course strong. I think it will be a great fight though. There is a lot on the line and I don't see the fight going the distance.

JA: The last time you fought was back in February against Enad Licina. You looked impressive in the fight. When can we see you back in the ring fighting again and who are some of the people that you might be eyeing to fight?

SC: I'm talking with my promotional team now and I'm looking to fight in August, although I don't have any names yet. My goal is to unify the division, so I'm ready for any of the belt holders.

JA: There has been a lot of great action in the cruiserweight division. I was wondering if you had seen the Godfrey-Kayode fight?

SC: Yeah, I did watch the fight. I was in Austria at the time. With that fight, I expected more from Matt. I didn't think he fought like he could or should have. Kayode, right now, is getting good exposure on Showtime. I just wish the American fans were getting access to better cruserweight fights.

JA: Steve, I don't want to keep you on too long. Is there anything else you want to say; any sponsors or websites you want to give a shout out to?

SC: Shout out to Revive Mints. Also, fans can buy my signature t-shirts at pound4poundapparel.com. Shout out to my fans here and overseas. I'm working hard and staying sharp and I can't wait to get back in the ring.
