"Bernard has looked real good in his fights against Jean Pascal and I think he's going to beat Chad Dawson too. Bernard is gonna be too crafty for Chad," stated world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr., who shared his thoughts on the fall clash between future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins and former light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson. For those that don't recall, Mayweather Sr. was Dawson's trainer when he captured his first world title, defeating then WBC light heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek, who was undefeated at the time. The two would part ways shortly after According to Mayweather Sr., Dawson's skills have regressed since that initial title-winning effort, and he doesn't think he'll be prepared for what the much more experienced Hopkins will bring to the table.
"Chad has looked like shit, man. I wasn't impressed with him; all of his problems are mental," explained Mayweather Sr., who cut ties with Dawson shortly after he became champion due to a difference in training philosophies. "I see they got him trying to sit down on his left hand like Tommy Hearns sat down on his right hand, but the problem is he is the same height as Hearns, but he fights at 175 pounds," Mayweather Sr. continued, pointing out the changes in technique that his current trainer, Emanuel Steward, is trying to implement. "Hearns was the same size [in height] as Chad, but he fought at 147 and when he hit people, he got them out of there. Chad isn't knocking people out anymore. You have to go back 4 years or so to find the last person he stopped," he added.
