KEVIN CUNNINGHAM: "DEVON IS KNOWN TO HAVE A SWEET TOOTH, SO HE HAS SUGAR SHANE ON THE BRAIN"

By David Kassel | August 11, 2011
KEVIN CUNNINGHAM:

"Devon wants to fight the big names, not no-name, tune-up guys. One of the names Devon's interested in is Sugar Shane. We think that would be a perfect fight. After Shane's disappointing performance against Pacquiao, it would be a great situation to prove he's not washed up and finished because he would be fighting a young gun who is also a top name. It's great for Devon also because he would be fighting a future hall-of-famer and a guy he grew up watching and looking up to. Devon is known to have a sweet tooth, so he has Sugar on the brain.  And let's be honest Dave, other than Floyd and Pacquiao, Devon Alexander is the only welterweight that Shane can be matched with and sell out a 12,000 seat arena," stated world-class trainer Kevin Cunningham, who made it clear that former jr. welterweight champion Devon Alexander wants to look great against a big name when he makes his debut at welterweight and "Sugar" Shane Mosley is just the type of name they're looking for.

DK: What's going on Kevin?

KC: Ah Dave, me and my wife just got back from vacation and I'm hearing lots of things and reading lots of stuff. Right now, we're just taking it easy. Devon's free agent status is official now. He is listening to and feeling out offers, you know, offers from pretty much everybody, looking for the right fit for Devon Alexander.

DK: Can you give an update on any offers out there right now?

KC: Like I said, we just got back from vacation and we've just been relaxing right now. I haven't talked to anybody at this point. There hasn't been any conversations with any promotional companies on our end as of right now, but Devon is officially a free agent and he is ready to listen to offers.

DK: What is it that Devon and yourself are looking for in the next promotional company?

KC: Devon is just looking for the right situation. At this point, he is just looking at what's the right situation, and that remains to be seen.  As a free agent, you get the opportunity to look at the best offers out there and Devon is going to be the one that makes the ultimate decision.

DK: Is there a timetable for when you want to have the contract situation done?

KC: I'm not sure right now. At this point, you gotta see who you're gonna be comfortable with. I can tell you that Devon wants to get back in the ring before the end of the year.

DK: Yeah, he told me that when I talked to him last week.

KC: Well after talking to Devon, the move to welterweight is gonna give him the extra zap and energy he needs. He's a full-fledged man now and he's filled out and grown a couple inches since he was 15 years old. He's a full-fledged welterweight now. It would be great if Devon could get the names. Devon wants to fight the big names, not no-name, tune-up guys. One of the names Devon's interested in is Sugar Shane. We think that would be a perfect fight. After Shane's disappointing performance against Pacquiao, it would be a great situation to prove he's not washed up and finished because he would be fighting a young gun who is also a top name. DK: Any final thoughts Kevin?

KC: Devon is excited and ready to move up to welterweight and he's looking to make some serious noise. He would love to fight a legend like Shane Mosley in his debut at 147.
