BERTO VS. ALEXANDER PRELIMINARY TALKS HAVE ALREADY BEGUN

"You have an Amir Khan, who is planning to move up. You have a Marcos Maidana. You have a Paulie Malignaggi, who is sitting back, who is ready to fight. I know you guys already raged a bit of a Twitter war," stated Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who named a number of potential fights that could be made during a press conference held earlier today for newly-signed Golden Boy Promotions fighter Devon Alexander. There was one fighter, however, that clearly stuck out as being at the top of that list. "We have the IBF world champion, who I had some preliminary conversations, Berto," Schaefer continued, revealing that he already reached out to IBF welterweight champion Andre Berto about the possibility of a clash with the former jr. welterweight champion.

In the past, a fight with Berto is something that Devon's trainer, Kevin Cunningham, has expressed a great deal of interest in. "Berto, that's just a situation where he's another black fighter that they claim, well, they really don't claim; he can't sell no tickets, but I mean, him and Devon, I think that could be something big if it's done right," Cunningham would tell me in an interview earlier this year. "A showdown with him and Berto, that could be hot."

Whether or not Berto would be interested in that fight remains to be seen, however, if it's not, Schaefer believes that there's no limit to the options that are available to Alexander. "You have Matthew Hatton, who had the great showing against Canelo Alvarez. You have, win or lose, you have a Victor Ortiz. You have some of the youngers guys who are starting to make noise, like Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia, Jessie Vargas, so on, so ther's a deep pool of fighters and fights which I think can be done," he added. "I will go to work next week, Devon, and start dealing with the networks and hopefully get you a fight as soon as possible."
