JEFF MAYWEATHER: "MANNY IS THE ONE THAT HAS TO PROVE HIMSELF"

By Percy Crawford | September 29, 2011
JEFF MAYWEATHER:

"I thought it was a masterful performance and everybody knows why Ortiz did what he did. He got frustrated. I loved the ending. It was the perfect ending to a situation in which Ortiz created. He started it and Floyd finished it...he is still proving that nobody can beat him. Manny Pacquiao ain't proved that; he got his ass whooped 3 times already. It's basically a situation where Floyd ain't got to prove nothing. He's already proved himself. Manny is the one that has to prove himself. If Manny don't want to take the test, f him. It's that simple," stated world-class trainer Jeff Mayweather, who had a lot to say about his newphew's 4th round knockout victory over Victor Ortiz. You don't want to miss what he had to say as Mayweather shares his strong opinion on Victor Ortiz, Manny Pacquiao and much more.

PC: Jeff, I have been slipping, man. I got everyone's opinion on the Mayweather/Ortiz fight but yours. So what did you think of the fight?

JM: I thought it was a masterful performance and everybody knows why Ortiz did what he did. He got frustrated. I loved the ending. It was the perfect ending to a situation in which Ortiz created. He started it and Floyd finished it.

PC: I described it as instant karma. It's like when a purse snatcher gets hit by a car minutes later while running, you know? Ortiz fouled and paid the price seconds later.

JM: Right, exactly (laughing). I like that. And the other thing is this, people don't know the severity of what that headbutt could have done. He could have pushed Floyd's nose up into his brain and killed him. I know that sounds extreme, but when you have a guy launch himself into you like that, you don't know what can happen. People never think about that until somebody gotta point it out to them or it happens. He also could have broken his nose. Then nobody wouldn't be saying, "It was an accidental foul." No, it wasn't an accidental foul. He got his ass whooped and that's what he resorted to, dirty tactics, and that's what he gets. He got exactly what he had coming to him, a good ass whoopin'.

PC: You have been watching Larry Merchant interview Floyd for a long time and I'm sure, to some degree, you saw the fallout coming. What are your thoughts on the post-fight interview?

JM: It's another situation of this, Larry Merchant has never given Floyd credit practically his whole career. He has never given him his credit. That in itself speaks volumes. And then the other thing is this, Floyd said, "Look, I don't want to interview with you no more. Go ahead and interview Victor Ortiz," and that's what he should have done. At that point in time, Floyd let him know that he no longer wanted to talk to him. He said it in a kind way, and he [Merchant] continued on, asking Floyd, "What are you talking about," and kinda bucking up to Floyd. So from that point on, it was merited because the man already told you I don't want to talk to you no more, go and talk to Victor Ortiz, but you want to egg it on and keep going and keep going and then go on to say what you would do if you were 50 years younger. And it's obvious, whether you were 50 years younger, 30 years younger, or 20 years younger, the only way you stand a chance is if you had a gun. Floyd would have whooped your ass then because he is the best fighter and he would have been the same fighter he is now and you ain't never fought in your life.

PC: Victor Ortiz and Oscar De La Hoya recently held a conference call to discuss the end of the fight, and Ortiz went from saying it was unintentional to it was intentional, but was retaliation from some elbows he had received. Of course they were lobbying for a rematch.

JM: He is looking for another payday. The reality is this, he doesn't even deserve a fucking rematch for what he done. You the fucking one showed you don't have any sportsmanship. You went out like a bitch and got dirty when you couldn't take the ass whoopin' that you were getting; you got dirty. He tried to headbutt Floyd at least 4 different times in the fight. Oscar wants Victor Ortiz to get a payday, but he didn't do nothing to deserve a payday. It's like this, you had your shot, you didn't do nothing when you had your shot, so why do you need another shot?

PC: Floyd, at times, sounds like he wants to remain active and fight again soon. Of course, all eyes will be on November 12th when Pacquiao takes on Marquez. Everyone is hoping for some negotiations and a fight between Floyd and Manny after that. Alex Ariza came out and said they won't be taking any additional testing now. What are your thoughts Jeff?

JM: Well, I mean, basically it's a situation where Arum is not behind it [the fight]. It's a situation where Arum is not ready to cash out on Manny. He wants Manny to beat everybody and make as much money as he possibly can and allow Floyd to be Manny's last fight. That way, if he wins or lose, it doesn't matter. And plus, the thing is this, it's not whether Floyd is trying to dictate or not, but Floyd is the biggest draw in the sport; it ain't Manny. He got enough power to where if that's what he wants to do, then that's what he will do. If you ain't got nothing to hide, then you would want to do it. If you want the fight just as much as he wants the fight...but everybody wants to point the finger and say, "Floyd is scared!" what is he scared of? What is he scared of, shit? He sure ain't scared of Manny Pacquiao. He ain't got no reason to be scared of him, shit. The dudes that Manny Pacquiao beat, he beat them too and Manny Pacquiao fighting them after him. The only onr that really beat Manny's ass, other than the time that he was knocked out, was Marquez. Floyd played with Marquez and this is the same guy that beat you twice. Manny has a loss to the guy that was on Floyd's undercard. And that's no disrespect to Morales, but it's a fact. It's just Manny's people getting behind him and of course Manny is playing the good guy and everybody wants to jump on his bandwagon because Floyd don't care about playing the bad guy. And that's part of the territory of playing the bad guy, but people know who you are and they know what you stand for and he's the biggest thing in the sport. And he is still proving that nobody can beat him. Manny Pacquiao ain't proved that; he got his ass whooped 3 times already. It's basically a situation where Floyd ain't got to prove nothing. He's already proved himself. Manny is the one that has to prove himself. If Manny don't want to take the test, fuck him. It's that simple.

Floyd just did almost a million and a half buys with a guy who has never dreamed of being a pay-per-view headliner. And as far as "Star Power", this fool Ortiz thinking it had something to do with him and it had nothing to do with him. He had the nerve to say after that fight that Floyd needs to fight him because he is the money and the draw. You the what? You not even the talk out here. You're like a snake in the pile. TMZ wouldn't have knew who he was if he hadn't fought my nephew. I bet you that. I have never seen a fighter that was so damn happy about losing. He was so caught up in the moment that it was almost like somebody had to wake him up and say, "Hey, you just lost." He shouldn't have been acting as though he won. That was so funny to me because this dude is so happy and smiling and it's like, "Dude, you just got your ass knocked out. You ain't champion no more." He was so happy; I don't even think he realized that. The only thing it showed was that, first of all, he didn't belong there in the first place and secondly, he didn't know how to handle being in that situation, and that's all it was. All it was about for him was a payday. One thing that Floyd said, and he said it before the fight, was if you make a mistake, I'm gonna make you pay. And not only that, but he said this before the fight and he says it before all of his fights, and it's true, it's different once you get in there. That's exactly what happened. He got in there and came charging hard. The first time he charged in hard, he got caught with a right hand by Floyd and he started to backpedal. Now wait a second. Now you ain't vicious no more. Now you fucking running. Why are you running? You are supposed to be stronger and you're younger. Like I said, and one thing that Floyd said and he backs it every time, is this, once you get in there, it's different and he's right. He [Ortiz] found out and realized that it's not like everybody else I've fought. I might be stronger, well, he thought he was stronger because that's all it is. Everybody that gets in the ring thinks they are stronger than Floyd, but the reality is this, Floyd could have fought at this weight that he's fighting at now 10 years ago, but when you're young, you're flashy, and you want to show everything. You want to show every little piece of arsenal that you have. The thing is, out of that, he felt Floyd couldn't take his punch, Floyd couldn't do this and Floyd couldn't do that, but one thing he has to understand is Floyd works harder than anybody in this sport. He got so frustrated that he couldn't land nothing. The only thing he did land was that damn headbutt. These guys think that Floyd isn't strong, but once they get in there, they realize it is a whole different animal. And not only that, you realize, "wait a second, he is stronger than I thought he was, he is faster than I thought he was, and damn, I can't even hit him." The guy got frustrated and he looked for a way out. You don't headbutt a guy in a heated battle; a blatant headbutt like that. And my thing is this, if it was intentional, why you apologizing in the first place. Anything that is done intentional is meant to happen.

PC: We always talk about Floyd's layoffs. It takes a special athlete to take the amount of time he takes away from this sport and still look sharp and never misses a beat. He truly is a guy that comes around every 20 to 30 years.

JM: Definitely. I mean, the last fighter that was able to do something like this was Ray Leonard. He took all of that time off and he came back and fought Marvin Hagler. In comparison, the only person that can come close to what Floyd is doing is Ray Leonard. He came back and fought one of the best guys out there.

PC: Definitely Ray Leonard in boxing, and Michael Jordan as far as any other sport. He took time off and came back and really never missed a beat.

JM: Right. Well that's the thing, special athletes can do that. These types of athletes come along every 20 years. It's one of those situations where, no matter how much you hate Floyd, once his career is over with and he's done and he's packed up the gloves and is done for good, they are gonna miss him. Even if you weren't a fan of his, you're gonna miss him.

PC: I can't let you go without asking you to explain the thing that King Mo has been talking to me about. So what is "The Doom" (laughing)?

JM: (Laughing) I call it a "Doom" session because when I'm training fighters and I have my soft mitts, I counter when they throw punches, and I don't do it after every punch; I pick my moments and I prove to them that their defense isn't as good as they think it is. And when I pop them upside of the head, what I say is, "Doom!" That's basically what "Doom" session is and it's funny now because it's become like a growing theme. Everybody kind of knows what it is now, so they be like, "Ah man, you about to get hit with the 'Doom'."

PC: King Mo said it's like you are throwing pies at them (laughing).

JM: (Laughing) He'll be coming out soon. I talked to his manager and he said that they are going to get with me when I get back from Celestino's fight. He is a real, real cool brother. I mean, I like him as a person, not just because he is a fighter or anything like that. He is just a real, real cool guy.

PC: Yeah, him and his manager Mike Kogan are good people, man.

JM: Yeah they are, man. (Laughing) I know he ain't ready for the "Doom", but he got it coming.

PC: I either gotta fly out or get video proof of it this time.

JM: Yeah, it's so funny that he put that in that article. When I read your article and it said something about the "Doom", I thought that was funny, man. The "Doom" is getting famous now.
