"I think that he's too small. He might be able to, because Pacquiao, to me, is not technically all that, so he might be able to catch Pacquiao with some stuff, but when Pacquiao catches him, if Pacquiao has the same stuff that he had with me, if he catches him with a touch, then Marquez is going down. If Mayweather can drop Marquez easily like that, if Katsidis can stun him like that at lightweight, Pacquiao, when he hits him, because I don't have a light chin, you know what I'm saying, I don't have a weak chin, so when Pacquiao hits him, he's going to hurt Marquez," stated former welterweight champion Shane Mosley, who shared his thoughts on the upcoming November 12 showdown between pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao and lightweight king Juan Manuel Marquez. BT: Sugarman, what's going on?
SM: Ben, what's up man?
BT: Not much my man. Just wanted to catch up with you real quick. I've been seeing you poppin' up here and there, making appearances at a few gyms. What's up, man? You starting to get that itch?
SM: I'm just messing around with everybody. I mean, I have little Shane, he's doing his thing, so I just kind of pop in every now and then, you know, and kind of play with him and everybody a little bit. You know I'm in the gym. I keep myself up.
BT: No doubt. Have you been keeping up with all the craziness that's been going on in the boxing world lately?
SM: Nah, not really. I haven't been to any of the fights. Why, what happened?
BT: Oh, nothing; there's just been a lot of crazy endings to fights lately, like the Hopkins-Dawson fight.
SM: Oh, yeah, I've seen the fight.
BT: Or better yet, how about Floyd's fight with Victor Ortiz? I'm sure you saw that ending too. What did you think of that?
SM: Yeah, I mean, it is what it is, you know what I'm saying? He [Ortiz] tried to headbutt him so many times and what can he say? What did he expect from that? I think they both [Hopkins and Ortiz] thought that it would end in a disqualification or a no contest or something and the referees wouldn't have it, you know? It was clearly a sucker move what he [Mayweather] did on Victor, but Victor was trying to do whatever. He [Mayweather] was like, "Okay, you want to keep trying to do this, so I'm going to show you something." I don't know. It didn't look like it was that hard either, like it could knock him out like that. It looked like it was a shoulder punch. Maybe it would sting him and daze him, but not knock him out, like not stop him like he couldn't get back up and shit. It didn't even look like he hit him that hard.
BT: Yeah, I didn't think it looked quite as devastating either. I thought maybe he was trying to milk it a little bit to see if he was going to get the disqualification, but once he realized he wasn't, it was almost like he didn't really even try to get up. Like he said, "Fuck it! I'm still getting paid." But whatever. So what's up, man? Are you keeping an eye on the Cotto/Margarito rematch in December? Are you still hoping to get in the ring with one of those guys?
SM: Yeah, I want to see what they do, you know, and then we'll see what happens from there. That would be great if I could get the winner of those two. I mean, I fought both guys so, you know, it would be great to get back in the ring with either one of them. I mean, people keep talking to me about Berto, but we'll see.
BT: Who do you like in that fight? I think it might be a repeat of the first fight.
SM: I don't know; I don't know.
BT: Really? Cotto just switched trainers. He got rid of Emanuel Steward and brought in some renowned Cuban amateur trainer.
SM: Yeah, but see, what's going to happen is the Cuban amateur coach is going to make him box a little bit more. See, what happened was Cotto tried to fight him. He didn't box him. Cotto wanted to fight him, like inside and shit. You know, you gotta stay on the outside and try to box him. That's what the Cuban coach is going to do; he's going to make him box him, make him move around, because they've seen what kind of success I had too when I was moving on him, jabbing, jabbing, moving, jabbing. They're going to watch that tape. That's the blueprint. But it's going to be whether or not Cotto can maintain that because styles make fights. I'm a different style of a fighter than Cotto is. Cotto is more of a brawler and he's been that way for all his whole fighting career. Now he's gotta try to be a boxer. See, me, I was a boxer-puncher. Back then, I was a boxer, but also I could punch too. Margarito doesn't have the ability to be able to box like that. I mean, he can box, but that's not his makeup, you know.
BT: We'll see. I think mentally, Margarito's got him, man. You should probably be pulling for Margarito anyway because if he wins, I think he'll want to avenge that loss against you. If Cotto wins, I'm not so sure he'll want to give you a rematch.
SM: I would want to fight Cotto just to get that rematch. I know I beat him, but I want to knock him out, you know what I'm saying? I want to walk him down and knock him out.
BT: I hear ya, man, but I'm telling you, if Margarito wins, I have a feeling he would love to prove to everyone that the loss to you was more about him being unfocused due to the controversy about the handwraps than anything else.
SM: Yeah, well, stylistically, I wouldn't be a good fight for Margairto. If I was Margarito, I wouldn't fight me. Stylistically, he can't do it. All it's going to do is make it worse because I'm going to really whoop him up again. He can't beat me. I think if Cotto wins, that will be a better fight. Honestly, I don't even care. I just want to get back in there. I'm just letting my achilles heal up properly, the right way, and then I'm going to get in there and do what I'm supposed to and fight the way I'm supposed to fight.
BT: What about this Pacquiao-Marquez fight coming up? Do you think Marquez has any kind of shot against Pacquiao?
SM: I think that he's too small. The thing is it probably would have been better when they was at lightweight because they're both smaller and Pacquiao was smaller, but now Pacquiao is a full-fledged welterweight, you know. His ass is almost a jr. middleweight. He's full-fledged, his legs are big, he's built up, so Marquez is going to have problems. Marquez said he's not going to run like Shane did and he's going to fight and all that other bullshit, so he's asking for it. He's gonna get his ass knocked out. He's asking to get knocked out by what he's doing. Like I said, he [Pacquiao] didn't feel that strong to me physically. Maybe that's because I'm physically stonger anyway, but as far as punches are concerned, he just touches you and you're fucking bruised up. My whole face was bruised up and he really didn't hit me that much.
