MAYWEATHER MAIL: HOW WILL THIS AFFECT HIS CAREER AND SKILLS?

The news of Floyd Mayweather's sentencing continues to send shockwaves throughout the boxing community, sparking a ton of reaction from fans and media alike. The emails have not stopped pouring with questions about how this will affect Mayweather's career and a potential showdown with Manny Pacquiao. Although I don't have all the answers, I do have an opinion, so check out what I had to say to inquiring minds who want to know.

Ben, I think floyd going to jail will be good for the build up to the fight. Just picture 24/7 first episode floyd comming out of jail with a beard and hair on his head a solidified villian VS the goodie good Pacquaio. The attention it will get because people will tune in to see if the jail time changed floyd pissed him off made him more agressive or what a good story to show and tell. How do you think floyds jail time will affect him. - D, las vegas

BT: D, whether he's fighting Manny Pacquiao or someone else in his next fight, I think even more people are going to tune in based on the curiosity that you just mentioned. How will it affect him, both physically and mentally? Will he be rusty? Will he be more aggressive? People will be curious, and as such, people will tune in. Personally, I don't think it will affect him at all...at least I hope not. I definitely don't think it will affect him physically. There is, however, the possibility that it could affect him mentally. I mean, for all we know, he could come out, decide he's had enough and never fight again. It's just hard to say. Like I said though, in my opinion, I really don't think it will have any impact on Floyd Mayweather the fighter. If I had to lean one way or the other, I'd say he's going to come out looking to make an example out of somebody, so whoever he does fight might end up getting Floyd Mayweather on his A-game, which might be a bad thing for them.

Ben, I don't know if you are a Nevada resident but I do know you aren't a lawyer.  However if you are a resident I have a question.  How was Floyd possibly charged with domestic violence when he wasn't living with or dating Josie at the time?  I know the laws in Nevada state that domestic violence is an act of violence between members of the SAME household whether they are married or dating.  I know it sounds like some type of legal loophole however the law is the law.  To give an example, Casey Anthony was charged with murder of her child in the state of Florida.  Let's pretend she wanted to make a plea deal.  She wouldn't be eligible to plea down to an unlawful abortion because the child was already born.  She would plea down to some form of misdemeanor manslaughter.  I think they erroneously charged Floyd with a crime by legal definiton he certainly didn't commit. I love Fight Hype and I think you guys do an outstanding job covering the sport of boxing. You guys are the P4P best. - Cedrick

BT: Cedrick, I'm definitely not a lawyer, and I'm also not a Las Vegas resident, so I can't really answer your question, but I assume Mayweather's very expensive lawyers have already exhausted any and all loopholes that they know of...at least, I would hope so. If I had to guess, I'd probably say that if an incident between a mother and a father took place in front of their children, whether they're still in a relationship or not, that probably makes it a domestic incident. Again, I'm no lawyer though, so that's only a guess. Regardless, I think it was pretty evident, however, that the prosecution was going to "get their man" from the outset considering that he was slapped with felony charges of coercion, robbery and grand larceny after allegedly verbally chastising his kids and taking back some iPhones that he likely purchased in the first place. Let that be a lesson to all of the verbally abusive parents and indian givers of the world. Nevertheless, he copped the plea and was given his sentence, so he'll have to serve anywhere between 60 and 90 days. I heard a rumor that they may be appealing the sentence, however, so we'll see how that all plays out. At the end of the day though, it means little as far as his boxing career is concerned other than a delayed return to the ring.

Hey Ben, I am a huge fan of your website. I read this every morning like it's my daily newspaper. I appreciate all the boxing news you provide and I can say with out a shadow of doubt you are far from bias. You keep it 100 and me as well as many other appreciate you for that.  I really hope Mayweather is able to get the sentence reduced to at least 30 days. As far as bob (the old guy) arum, I agree with you. He doesn't want his cash cow getting exposed by arguably the greatest boxer in THIS DECADE. Paq has no lateral movement and cannot fight moving back wards. Also, how do I get a user name and password for your forum, would love to post my opinions? - Devon

BT: Thanks for the support. I guess in the eyes of some, telling the truth about what's going on regarding negotiations, or lack thereof, automatically makes me biased if I'm not co-signing the misleading information that Bob Arum is feeding to his go-to "journalists". Go figure! Regardless, we'll definitely continue to keep putting the truth out there. Speaking of Arum, it's not so much about him not wanting his "cash cow getting exposed". I don't think he has any problems with Pacquiao potentially losing a fight, so long as he loses to a Top Rank fighter. With him, it's simply a matter of business, and for Top Rank Promotions, business is extremely good whenever Pacquiao is fighting another Top Rank fighter. It's truly a very simple concept, and why so many fans of a particular fighter can't understand that is beyond me. It's ALWAYS about the benjamins when it comes to Bob Arum, he'll be the first one to tell you that, and so long as he can continue to submit bout contracts to the Nevada State Athletic Commission that list Pacquiao's purse as being $6 million, he will continue to make more money, or at worst the same of money, than he would make in a Mayweather/Pacquiao showdown. Thanks again for the support. We're actually going to be unveiling a new FightHype Community very soon, but in the meantime, you can register for the current forum at this link: http://www.fighthype.com/community/index.php?act=Reg&CODE=00

Ben, I´m a big boxing fan from Mexico and first of all congratulations on the great work with the site, I read it every day. I wanted to ask your opinion about a what do you think would be the outcome of a fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Canelo? I really think that Julio Cesar will definitely outbox Canelo. In my opinion Canelo is a boxer with too much publicity that is not really that great of a fighter as the media (specially here in Mexico) are telling the people, I think that challenging Mayweather to a fight was really stupid and made me laugh a lot. They want to make Canelo the next big Mexican fighter just like Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. once was but putting him against Myaweather will simply put an end to all that and make him look really bad haha.

Well please let me know what you think and keep up the great work, I love all the video interviews you get from Mayweather, you should make some kind of raffle or giveaway with him so a fan can win a prize to meet him, that would be awesome !! - Andres

BT: Thanks for the kudos, Andres. At this point, I give the edge to Chavez Jr. Although he himself is still a work in progress, the fact that he's the naturally bigger man would play a factor in the fight. I think his chin would stand up to anything that Canelo would land, and contrary to popular belief, Jr's actually stating to develop some pretty sound boxing fundamentals. While Canelo might have some moments early in the fight, Jr. would too and I can see him having more to offer as the fight goes to the later rounds. Give me Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision with scores like 116-112 or 115-113. Personally, I think they should let that fight marinate a little while longer. I'd like to see both of them step up their level of competition before fighting each other. As for Canelo vs. Mayweather...EASY WORK! Mayweather might lose 3 rounds tops in that fight.

Wassup Ben, Big fan and keep up the good work and for always keepin it real.  Let the haters hate, beacuse the haters still find time to read your articles.  Anyways, other than the money vs pac fight, i came up with a list of my five dream fights of 2012.  Wanted to see if you agreed with my picks on who would win and what would be your dream fights.  1) Andre Ward vs Sergio Martinez.  Winner: Ward - Beacuse of his superior skills (i think hes #2 p4p behind money).  2) Chad Dawson vs Sergio Martinez:  Winner: I would pick Chad beacuse of his speed.  3) Tim Bradley vs Amir Khan:  Tough one but im going with Bradley.  Khan has shown he vulnerable to pressure and hasnt learned how to tie up a fighter when in trouble instead of running.  4) Julio Chavez vs Saul Alvarez:  Going with Alvarez beacuse of his speed and power will overwhelm Chavez.  5) This one is already happening but Berto vs Ortiz rematch.  I have Berto winning because all Berto needs to do is control Ortiz with a jab.  And also if he tightens up his defense and boxes with the mentality of hit and not be hit...he should win.  I think hes learned his lesson.  Btw, I couldnt think of anyone who could challenge money.  The only fight if the weight matched up would be money vs andre ward.  I think that would be an awesome fight and the winner would be the person that could outhink the other.  It would be a strategic fight for sure!  - Tejas Doshi, Los Angeles

BT: What's up Tejas? I like all of those fights, and agree with most of the outcomes. Ward over Martinez, based on style and size. Dawson over Martinez for the same reason, style and size. Bradley over Khan, because he's much more relentess than Peterson is. Chavez over Alvarez, simply because I'm still not 100% sold on his power, especially against a naturally bigger man. And Ortiz over Berto, simply because when it comes to rematches, usually the outcome is the same as the first fight. IF Andre Berto can do everything that you mentioned (establish the jab and tighten up his defense), then yeah, I can see him pulling it out, but I just don't think he'll make any of the necessary changes, at least not while he's still working with the same trainer. Old habits are hard to break, and Andre Berto has a habit of loading up with his shots early and fighting with a loose defense, two things that are not good to have the longer a fight lasts. Regardless, I'm definitely looking forward to that fight because I think the style of both guys will always produce fireworks. That's a good thing for us fans.

What's up bro, Merry Christmas to u and your family. I wanted to write u and talk about all these haters in the world and how gay they really sound. All these grown men talking about dick on a boxing site and it really creeps me out. I'm no ass kisser but u know I'm a fan of yours and all the writers at fightHype so keep u the good work and just brush these haters off man. They have nothing better to do but think about men's dicks which is very disturbing LOL... I also wanted to know if us true boxing fans would be able to write Mayweather while he's locked up cause I've been their b4 and having people write u really helps u out in their... Write back bro. - Dwight

BT: Merry Christmas to you and your family as well, Dwight. My man, haters are readers too, so we appreciate their support as well. I have no idea if fans will be able to write to him, but feel free to send whatever message you may have to me and I'll do my best to get it to him. Thanks for the support.

Man, those people that are emailing you about oral sex are gay! Plain and simple! By the way, I think its funny how quick guys like Dan Rafael and ESPN were so quick to report on Floyd's sentencing. But when he beat some other cases a couple of months ago, you couldn't hardly find anything about Floyd being not guilty for those!

I also seen some comments from Steve Kim joking about you interviewing Floyd from jail. I don't know why he is fronting though. If you did interview him from jail, he would be one of the first people to tune in! Go FightHype! - Roddrick

BT: LOL. Those people are just lashing out at someone who they think is being impacted by the news, but the reality of the situation is that unlike them, FightHype.com does not revolve around just 1 or 2 fighters. Maybe they only like to read about 1 or 2 fighters, but myself, Percy Crawford, and the rest of Team FightHype are constantly updating the website with interviews and information about all kinds of fighters, from upcoming prospects to veterans of the sport who most of the new "fans" have never even heard about. Yet, the majority of the emails that I get are all about Floyd Maywather and/or Manny Pacquiao. I truly hope all of those same fans still watch and support the sport when Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao actually do retire. I know FightHype.com will still be around. The question is, will they? As for Steve Kim, like you said, if we did do something like that, his jealous ass would probably watch it. Truth be told, I'm not sure if he's hating on Floyd Mayweather or just hating on me becuase I stopped taking his calls when he was trying to act like he was my buddy when he was really just sniffing around looking for some news. Either way, I'm really not thinking about what Steve Kim is doing. It's good to know, however, that he's thinking about what we're doing.

Great job on the reports man not much I can ask in the mayweather news that havent already been asked but what next for miguel cotto is it definite tgat hes leaving top rank.. If so is canelo, kirkland, angulo on his short list of next opponents to face. By the way when are you and king mo going to debate

BT: Thanks. What's next for Cotto? Good question. If I was a betting man, I'd say he's headed for greener pastures, which in my opinion would be Golden Boy Promotions. There's a slim possibility that Bob Arum could lure him back to Top Rank with the promise of a Pacquiao showdown, but other than that, I really don't see too many other lucratives bouts at the company for him other than a showdown with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. When I look at the names with Golden Boy Promotions, however, I see many more opportunities. Canelo, Kirkland, Lara, Ortiz, Khan, Angulo, Maidana, and Alexander are all possibilities that could keep him employed for the next 3-4 years. Not to mention, a move to Golden Boy would still open up the possibility of facing Floyd Mayweather. It really just depends on what Miguel Cotto is looking to do. If he's thinking short term and looking to cash out with one more big fight, then he'll likely stay with Top Rank for a fight with Pacquiao or Chavez Jr. If he's thinking long term, then he'll likely go with Golden Boy. My money is on the latter. As for King Mo, believe me, he don't want none. He keeps scheduling these fights trying to duck and dodge me. You might see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao before you see Mo go head to head with me.

Pactards were jumping for joy when Floyd was sentenced but I know that this situation is only gonna make Mayweather more of a beast when he gets out. - Musa Sayeed Salahuddin

BT: LOL. Isn't it funny how that works? Those same people who actually believed that Bob Arum was negotiating the fight are now jumping for joy that the fight won't happen in May because of Floyd's sentencing. LOL. I certainly hope Floyd comes out with a bigger chip on his shoulder looking to prove a point. Then again, he could also come out extremely bitter at the world and decide not to put his talents on display ever again. I hope the latter is not the case.
