VARGAS REMAINS UNDEFEATED AFTER GRUELING 10 ROUNDS

Jessie Vargas remains undefeated at 18-0 after a hard-fought fight against the tough Lanardo Tyner. The scores, which do not reflect the brutal 10 rounds Vargas had to endure in the main event, read 99-91 in his favor on all three judges' cards. Vargas started the first round focusing on the body, digging power shots that seemed to do little to Lanardo. That was until he landed a shot below the belt that sent Tyner to his knees. This would set the tone for the rest of the fight.

In the fourth round, Tyner hit Vargas with a low blow that every male in attendance could feel. After recuperating from the blow, Vargas went on the offense and mid-round landed a retaliatory low blow on Tyner that sent him reeling in pain.  Tyner tried to attack Vargas after the action was halted for him to recoup, forcing referee Tony Weeks to intervene and warn both fighters.

As the fight continued, Vargas worked his jab and fought on the outside, and in the final round, applied pressure, forcing Tyner to fight off the ropes. Both fighters continued to exchange until the final bell. Vargas controlled the majority of the fight and outworked Tyner during the many exchanges, resulting in an exciting fight and another victory for the young prospect.

On the undercard, Deandre Latimore faced off against Milton Nunez in a drama-filled 10-round jr. middleweight bout.  Latimore started the bout at a slow pace, picking away at Nunez with his jab. As the rounds continued, Latimore became more comfortable and let his hands go, landing some crisp, clean straight lefts that made one appreciate the chin of Nunez. In the ninth round, however, Nunez connected with a solid punch that wobbled Latimore, prompting Nunez to explode in an attempt to finish the fight.

Eventually, Latimore stumbled to the canvas while trying to hold on, resulting in a knockdown for Nunez, but he made it to his feet and survived the ninth. In the tenth round, Latimore was looking to keep his distance, but in the closing seconds of the final round, Nunez lunged forward connecting with his head, which sent Latimore to the canvas yet again in what was questionably ruled as another official knockdown. Latimore survived the fight, winning a majority decision with scores of 96-92, 95-94, 94-94.
