VANES MARTIROSYAN: "ARUM PROMISED ME HE WOULD GET ME K9 ON JUNE 9TH...LET'S DO IT"

By David Kassel | April 06, 2012
VANES MARTIROSYAN:

"Bob Arum promised me he would get me K9 on June 9th. If you speak with K9, if he accepts the fight, Bob Arum will put us on the card 100%. Bob Arum promised me we would be on the card. I'm ready and I wanna do it. Let's get camp started and let's get ready. It's a good opportunity for both of us. If he fights Cory Spinks, Don King will do everything to get Cory the win because he doesn't treat K9 well. June 9th is a big boxing day and it will be good for him to accept and everyone else to see us. Even people that aren't boxing fans watch boxing on that day because it's such a big boxing day. Business wise, the fight makes sense. When Bradley fought Casamayor, he got $1.2 million. That's a lot of money for an undercard. It's up to K9 at this point. I'm ready to fight...To K9, let's do it bro. I'm ready. It will be a great fight," stated undefeated jr. middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan, who responded to recent comments made by IBF jr. middleweight champion Cornelius "K9" Bundrage, making it crystal clear that he would love nothing more than to face him for the title on the June 9th undercard of Pacquiao vs. Bradley. Check it out!

DK: Vanes, how you doing?

VM: I'm doing good. Thank you.

DK: You obviously saw what K9 Bundrage had to say about facing you June 9th on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Timothy Bradley undercard. What do you think about what he had to say?

VM: Well, at first I didn't think he would fight me because he's looking for an easy opponent. Bob Arum told me he was going to try and get K9 for June 9th. Then the whole Chavez thing started, and it's the 3rd fight they said Chavez would fight me and then they don't want to do it. This time, I wanna step up and say something about K9. All these champions, they just talk, so I wanted to say something. They always fight another guy after calling me out or someone else; they fight another opponent they know they can beat instead of challenging me.

DK: You're a young, hungry, undefeated fighter. You're 25 years old, 32-0, and have been calling for a big fight. Has Bob Arum approached you about anything recently?

VM: Um, well, a couple days ago, my manager let me know Lee was fighting Chavez. I'm gonna give Chavez problems. They let me know the fight was off and then this K9 thing started. I want a big fight. I want to fight him really bad. I'm in my prime now. I'm #1 in the WBC and it's my time. You say you want the big fight on the big stage? Well, here it is. Give me my shot!

DK: Had you heard anything about being on the undercard before you read the interview with K9?

VM: My manager, since the Chavez fight didn't happen, I told him from now on, don't tell me about the fight happening until its 100%. These fighters say they will fight and then all of the sudden, they say they're going to fight someone else. Only let me know when its 100% sure. I talk to my manager every day, but he hasn't let me know everything, I'm sure, because I want to stay focused on training. He's talking with Bob Arum and Bruce Trampler every day. With Bob Arum, he talks with him every single day. They're working on something. It's my time. I'm kind of getting tired of waiting and it's hard to stay focused and getting ready for fights when you know the guy can't beat you and was calling you out, then he goes and takes another fight.

DK: What do you bring to the table for the fans that didn't get the chance to see you fight Troy Lowry back in February?

VM: I'm a boxer. My style is weird. I never got the opportunity to face an elite level, A-level fighter and I want that chance because I've sparred with all these guys and I bust 'em up. I busted up Roman Karmazin at Wild Card; Hopkins, I busted his eye. I beat Berto twice in the amateurs. I was the last guy to beat Timothy Bradley and dropped him twice. That was in the amateurs. I want the fans to see me because I know I can give them what they want and I'm good enough to beat all these guys. It's my time to get a chance to show it.

DK: You are one of many top-level fighters training out of the Wild Card Gym with Freddie Roach. I wrote an article about him having too much on his plate. Is that the case? How has Freddie made you a better fighter?

VM: I've been working with Edmund for almost the last two years plus. We're just waiting for Freddie and he's always busy, but he always makes time for me no matter what it is. If I had to fight Chavez, I would've trained with Edmund because Freddie is busy with Manny Pacquiao. Everybody who has seen me spar with Chavez knew I was going to beat him. Edmund and Freddie are both my trainers and coaches. They are both there for me when I need them.

DK: What is the training schedule like for you at the Wild Card Gym since there are so many fighters who train there?

VM: I do mitts with Freddie and bag work also. Edmund has been with me almost 2 years. We train at Edmund's gym Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday is sparring at Wild Card Gym. Freddie makes time when he has to, but he's a busy man.

DK: So back to the subject at hand, K9 Bundrage. What do you think of him as a fighter?

VM: I think outside of the ring, he's a nice guy. Inside the ring, he's a fighter. He went overseas and beat some good guys, good opponents. I don't wanna fight him because he's easy. I wanna fight him because it's a good fight and it's for a title. People need a great fight on the undercard because it will be a great fight to get the crowd amped for the main event. He has something I want. No hard feelings. No disrespect, but if he's really up for it, we want the fight. People will love it. He's a lot better than he was on The Contender. Let's do it. Why not?

DK: It seems there is still that one slot left on the undercard. Is that the case?

VM: Bob Arum promised me he would get me K9 on June 9th. Business wise, the fight makes sense. When Bradley fought Casamayor, he got $1.2 million. That's a lot of money for an undercard. It's up to K9 at this point. I'm ready to fight.

DK: I appreciate you reaching out, Vanes. We'll definitely have to get you back on as your next fight approaches. Anything you want to say to the fans out there or to K9 Bundrage?

VM: To K9, let's do it bro. I'm ready. It will be a great fight. To the fans, thank you for supporting me and keep following me. I'll be back in the ring really soon. Follow me on Twitter and Facebook @VanesBoxing.
