SPENCER FISHER: " I THINK WE'RE JUST GOING TO STAND AND BANG!"

By Percy Crawford | June 20, 2008
SPENCER FISHER:

"I'm just going to go out there and fight, let the chips fall where they do and whatever happens, happens. I'm a fighter's fighter. I'm not one to be making gameplans. I know what I like to do; I like to stand, but who knows? It's a fight and anything can happen," stated UFC lightweight contender Spencer Fisher as he talked about his fight Jeremy Stephens tomorrow night during The Ultimate Fighter Finale. Check out what else he had to say about Stephens, the fight, the accident he got into this week and much more. Check it out.

PC: How have you been doing man?

SF: I've been better. I wrecked my bicycle 2 days ago and I'm all jacked up. I got rash burns on my knees all the way up to my elbows; it's bad.

PC: Have you been able to train and has everything been good on that end?

SF: No, (laughing) not since that happened, but that's alright.

PC: Damn Spencer, are you going to be good to go tomorrow?

SF: Oh yeah! Once I get in there, the adrenaline will take over and I'll be fine.

PC: You were supposed to fight in April, but had to withdraw with a shoulder injury. How is the shoulder doing?

SF: It's fine!

PC: You haven't fought since November. I'm sure you are chomping at the bit for tomorrow to get here?

SF: Yeah, I'm ready to get back in there. Hopefully I'll shake whatever rust I have off.

PC: What kind of fight are you expecting from Jeremy Stephens?

SF: I think it's going to be a stand-up fight. He could try to surprise me and take me to the ground, but I think we're just going to stand and bang.

PC: Frankie Edgar was able to take you down and you could see your frustration as he was holding you down. Are you prepared for that? Is that something you've been training for?

SF: No, the last time I made a mistake and made a gameplan. I'm just going to go out there and fight, let the chips fall where they do and whatever happens, happens. I'm a fighter's fighter. I'm not one to be making gameplans. I know what I like to do; I like to stand, but who knows? It's a fight and anything can happen. We're going out there and we're going to get down.

PC: What do you think of Stephens as a fighter?

SF: I've seen his 3 fights in the UFC and I've also seen him fight in Des Moines and I like the kid as a person. I think he's a strong-willed kid. I have nothing but respect for him. If you're fighting in the UFC, you're tough. There is nothing I can take away from him, however, I see lots of holes in his game and hopefully I can capitalize on it and knock him out.

PC: A couple of fights ago, against Sam Stout, I told you that was the most complete I have ever seen you look. Do you feel like you're back at that level?

SF: I'll find out Saturday. For this particular fight, I hired 2 trainers to help me get my hands sharp. I hired Jeremy Williams and Coban, who is a 5-time Muay Thai Champion. I imagine this fight will be a stand-up fight. I'm strong at my stand-up, but I've been rusty. I haven't been in the cage in awhile so I think bringing the extra people in to help me was a good thing.

PC: You are always up for "Fight of the Night." Are you expecting that kind of fight?

SF: Absolutely! As a matter of fact, my teammate and I was talking about it. Drew is going to try and get "Knockout of the Night," but I'm going to try to beat him to it and get "Fight of the Night" and "Knockout of the Night." We're in competition. Last time we were on the same card, he got "Knockout of the Night" and I got "Fight of the Night."

PC: How have things been at the Miletich camp my man?

SF: It's good. We have a lot of talented people out there and tons of lightweights so things are going good.

PC: With the lightweight division being so stacked, do you think it's important that we see you 2, and maybe even 3, times this year to keep yourself in the mix?

SF: Absolutely! I got a family to support as well. I gotta get in there and get after it.

PC: I know you've been in the game a long time and that injuries are a part of it, but how frustrating have the injuries been?

SF: Extremely. I didn't want to pull out of my last one, but Monte thought it was best. I could punch all day, but the type of injury it was, I couldn't lift anything up or over my head and that's exactly the type of fight I would've had to have against Aurelio.

PC: This is the battle for Iowa bragging rights man. What is your prediction for this fight?

SF: That's an easy prediction. I'm 100% right on. I predict in my fight, the winner will be someone from Iowa.

PC: You've trained with Matt Hughes before when he was with Miletich camp. Is it surprising to you to see guys dominate him in his last couple of fights?

SF: Being the champion that he was, people watched him as a fan and of course as an opponent and he's been on top of his game so long, people are starting to figure out his plan and be able to do something about it. He's a great wrestler, but I think people are starting to be more well-rounded.

PC: Good luck tomorrow Spencer. I always tell you that you are one of my favorite fighters to watch. Is there anything you want to say to close out the interview?

SF: I appreciate that. I want to say thanks for all of your support and thanks to Billy Lane's.
