NORTH TEXAS NOTEBOOK: BOXING AND MMA RETURNS

By Sean Malone | August 21, 2008

The fight game has been in full swing here in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area as of late.  Below is some news and some nuggets of information to get you in the know here in North Texas.

Golden Boy Promotion Returns

Golden Boy Promotions will present their second fight promotion of 2008 here in North Texas when they host a 'Solo Boxeo' card on September 12 at the Quick Trip Ballpark in Grand Prairie, TX.

Headlining the card will be undefeated, but untested, Argentinean middleweight slugger Lucas Matthysse (22-0, 21 KOs) going ten rounds against battle tested Arturo Morua (25-11-1, 14 KOs) of Mexico.  Matthysse has fought all but one of his fights in his native Argentina, but seems to possess real KO power.  Despite Morua's less than impressive record, the fact remains that the Guadalajara native has fought the much better opposition and even boasts victories over Emanuel Augustus and Carlos Maussa.

The co-main event will pit Philly-based welterweight prospect Rock Allen (12-0, 7 KOs) against the always tough Gilbert Vera (9-2-1, 4 KOs) of Austin, TX.  Allen, who has not fought since November 2007, started his pro career as a much ballyhooed prospect thanks in part to his impressive amateur credentials which included a spot on the 2004 Olympic team.  In Vera, younger brother of Contender participant Brian Vera, Allen will have his hands full with a pressure fighter with an iron jaw.

Tickets are reasonably priced at $10 for general admission, $15 for reserved seating, and $50 for VIP infield seating and can be purchased at the Quick Trip Ballpark Box Office or by logging onto www.arihogsbasebal.com

Supreme Warrior Championship Presents Inception

Professional MMA has been in hiatus here in the North Texas region, but that will soon change thanks to new upstart promotional company Supreme Warrior Championship.  The Plano, TX based promotional outfit will put on their inaugural professional MMA show August 29 at the Frisco Convention Center (7600 John Q. Hammons Drive, Frisco, TX 75034).

The ten bout card will be headlined by Anthony Njokuani (8-1-0) who will do battle with Robert Johnson (10-3-0).  Njokuani is a local fighter who will soon be plying his craft inside the cage of the WEC.

Tickets have been moving at a brisk pace and can be purchased by visiting their website www.swcmma.com.  Tickets are prices range from $20 General Admission up to $100 for VIP tables.

The Hernandez Brothers Return to the Ring

According to George Galvan of Galvan Promotions, highly-touted Fort Worth based prospects Jose "El Loco" Hernandez (9-1, 3 KOs) and his brother Luis "Mago" Hernandez (9-0, 7 KOs) will both return to the ring on September 12 at the Wild Horse Pass Casino in Chandler, AZ.

Jose last fought in May, pounding out a one-sided eight round victory over tough-as-nails Adauto Gonzalez on Galvan promoted card at the Eddie Dean Ranch in Dallas, TX.  Jose is scheduled to face fellow young prospect Juan Garcia (14-1, 5 KOs) of Phoenix.  Garcia is looking to bounce back from his first professional loss a fourth round knock out at the hands of Cornelius Lock earlier in the year.

Luis will be making his first appearance inside a boxing ring since January when he banged out a six round unanimous decision over Wayne Fletcher.

Marroquin Returns

Dallas based bantamweight prospect Robert Marroquin (3-0, 3 KOs) will return to the ring on a Top Rank promoted show at the Isleta Hotel & Casino in Albuquerque, NM on September 5.  The show will be televised on Telefutura's Solo Boxeo.

Marroquin has created some industry buzz with his first round destruction of Roberto Perez last month in Corpus Christi.  Marroquin's is scheduled to face Gino Escamilla of Laredo, TX in a six round contest.
