JACK MOSLEY: "PACQUIAO WOULD HAVE A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH SHANE OR MAYWEATHER!"

By Percy Crawford | December 16, 2008
JACK MOSLEY:

"You see how Pacquiao outboxed Oscar? Shane needs to box Margarito the same way. Stay on your toes, box him, set up your shots, give him angles and then when he gets tired and you feel like you're ready, move in for the kill with the hooks and the body shotsÂ…I think Pacquiao would have a lot of trouble with Shane or Mayweather. He may even have trouble with Hatton too, you never know," stated trainer Jack Mosley as he shared his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao's dominant win over Oscar De La Hoya as well as Shane Mosley's upcoming clash with Antonio Margarito. Check out what he had to say about the special diet that De La Hoya was allegedly on and much more.

PC: How have you been doing Jack?

JM: Everything is going cool. Everything is real good.

PC: De La Hoya-Pacquiao didn't turn out the way we thought it would. What did you think of the fight?

JM: I was at the fight and after the 8th round, I decided I would leave and when I got to the top of the steps, they had then stopped the fight. I was getting ready to leave because Oscar was just weak.

PC: So you didn't need to see anymore of the fight, huh?

JM: Nah man because he couldn't offer anything so I said, "well, let me get out of here before this crowd starts leaving and I get stuck in the middle." After the 3rd or 4th round, I figured he would turn it on and get going, but then I saw where he just looked small and in a weak position; an inferior position.

PC: How much do you think the lack of weight gain affected Oscar?

JM: I found out later that he was on some kind of weird diet. I don't know who put him on that diet, but whoever put Oscar on that diet, lost the fight for him. That's what it was. They put him on that diet, whatever it was, and I don't know who did it, but whoever did it, they lost the fight for him. It was sad man. He lost every round. I don't know anything about that diet, but I hope Shane isn't on it. I don't want him on that stuff; no way.

PC: Do you think the only option for De La Hoya right now is retirement?

JM: Man, it's that diet that had him messed up. I think he could fight on, but no one is going to look good if they're dehydrated or weak. You can't do anything in that state and that wasn't him fighting out there. When you're going into a fight, everything gotta be right. He just couldn't do anything. Don't get me wrong, when time get up with you, you gotta go, but he was just on a crazy diet. That's the thing that lost the fight for him and I'm not making an excuse, but when you go in there, you gotta know what you're doing.

PC: Were you less impressed by De La Hoya or more impressed with Pacquiao's performance?

JM: I like the way Pacquiao was boxing. He looked really good. He was busy and on his toes. I think he did a great job with angles and the whole bit and Oscar didn't have no energy so he couldn't really do anything. With his style, it's not one where you dance and move. He has fast hands, but you have to have the energy. Pacquiao was bobbing, weaving and dancing and doing everything he needed to do. He was in total control of the fight.

PC: How do you see a fight with Pacquiao and Shane going if that was to ever be made?

JM: I would love that fight. I think Shane would do an outstanding job out there. It would be a good fight. For one thing, he's not going to be on that diet (laughing), so he won't be weak.

PC: Shane has a huge fight coming up in January against Antonio Margarito. How do you feel now that that fight is signed?

JM: As long as Shane is boxingÂ…you see how Pacquiao outboxed Oscar? Shane needs to box Margarito the same way. Stay on your toes, box him, set up your shots, give him angles and then when he gets tired and you feel like you're ready, move in for the kill with the hooks and the body shots.

PC: Another fight being talked about is Mayweather-Pacquiao. What's your opinion of that fight?

JM: That would be a good fight too. I think Mayweather is fast and has fast feet to move around. It would be an exciting fight. I think Pacquiao would have a lot of trouble with Shane or Mayweather. He may even have trouble with Hatton too, you never know. I think Shane hits harder than all of them so they really gonna have the most trouble out of him.

PC: I know you've wanted to see Shane fight smaller guys. Is that still the case?

JM: Yeah, he needs to fight some guys his size. Shane's been fighting guys bigger than him for years and now that he's older, he don't need to fight these big guys. He needs to fight guys his size and fight his fight and use his speed.

PC: I know you were there live so you didn't get the opportunity to hear what was being said in Oscar's corner, but a lot is being made about the advice, or lack thereof, from his corner. Do you think it was a bad move for Oscar to bring in Nacho and Angelo?

JM: I don't want to talk about other trainers, but Oscar should have stayed with what was working for him. I don't know who let him get on that diet, but evidently they had no idea what it was about or I'm thinking they would have said something about it. Then again, those guys are proven, world-class trainers and all of that so I don't want to say nothing against them.
