DAN HARDY: "IT WAS NICE TO GET THE VICTORY AND SHUT A FEW PEOPLE UP!"By Percy Crawford | June 26, 2009

| "I'm really not very interested in fighting the same guys over and over again, but I'm not in the business of picking fights anymore. If the UFC wants that fight, then that's what will happen, but I'm not about to call him out again because I feel like I've already done that and I don't need to do that again. If the fans want it, then bring it on, but other than that, I'm ready to move forward," stated UFC welterweight Dan Hardy as he talked about his future plans after his win over Marcus Davis at UFC 99. Check it out!
PC: Congratulations on the big win over Marcus Davis.
DH: Thanks!
PC: What did you think of your performance?
DH: To be honest with you, it wasn't my best performance. I just really struggled to kind of get going. I don't know why; I never have that problem. It's just one of those things. Sometimes you have an off night and I was just fortunate enough to do enough to get the win.
PC: Was there any added pressure for you being that it was built up as this big grudge match and it was on such a big stage?
DH: Not really because to be honest, I always like to put pressure on myself before I fight, so I don't think that was a factor. He threw me off because I trained for a slightly different gameplan. I thought he would be more aggressive than he was. He wasn't as aggressive as I thought he would be, so that kind of made it difficult.
PC: Were you a little surprised that you had to defend so many takedown attempts from Davis?
DH: Not really! I did think he was going to try and take me down. You can tell with Marcus when you look at his physique leading up to the fight. You can tell when he plans on standing and trading punches or when he plans on taking a guy down. I saw in the videos leading up to the fight that he had been lifting weights because he was looking quite muscular, so I was really working on my wrestling. It wasn't a real surprise when he tried to take me down, but I will admit he was quite strong. But I kind of expected that with his physique.
PC: After the decision was read, he chose not to embrace or shake your hand. Do you think that is an indication that he still has a grudge with you?
DH: It didn't really surprise me to be honest. I think if the fight had a more clear result, he would have been a little more likely to accept the result and shake hands. I think with the decision being so tight, that's why he was still angry about the whole thing. He felt like he won the fight.
PC: Going into the 3rd round, did you sense you needed that round and that the fight was even going into the final round?
DH: To be honest, I felt like I won every round. Particularly going into the 3rd round, I felt like I did enough damage to him and that I was going to win that 3rd round comfortably. I must admit, I was surprised with the split decision. I didn't really feel like I had taken any punishment. I basically just defended takedowns and was never really under any pressure in the fight. I felt like I landed the cleaner shots that inflicted the most damage. I was confident that I had won the fight, but the split decision was quite a surprise.
PC: Davis has already stated that he wants a rematch with you by the end of the year. Is that something you would entertain or would you like to move on?
DH: I'm really not very interested in fighting the same guys over and over again, but I'm not in the business of picking fights anymore. If the UFC wants that fight, then that's what will happen, but I'm not about to call him out again because I feel like I've already done that and I don't need to do that again. If the fans want it, then bring it on, but other than that, I'm ready to move forward.
PC: With all of the pre-fight talk between the two of you, how satisfying was this victory?
DH: It was real satisfying, even without all of the trash talking before the fight. A win over Marcus Davis is always a good thing to have on your record. Honestly, a lot of people leading up to the fight felt that maybe I was talking too much and maybe I wouldn't be able to back it up and I just like to prove people wrong. A lot of people count me out in every fight I have. I'm always the underdog and nobody thinks I'm going to win. It was nice to get the victory and shut a few people up!
PC: You always seem to be so calm inside of the Octagon. Where does that come from? Is it your preparation or are you just that comfortable in a fight?
DH: I think it's just because I know I'm ready. I trained for that fight for 14 weeks and I felt like I had everything I needed to win the fight. At no point in the fight do I think I might lose. I step into the Octagon knowing what's going to happen so I look forward to the victory. I never see myself losing the fight in no kind of way. I think that's why I'm calm because I'm enjoying myself and I know I'm going to win.
PC: He's had a history of getting cut during fights. You were able to bust him up pretty good. Did your confidence grow from the more blood you saw on his face?
DH: I think one thing that a lot of people haven't picked up on is I actually get stronger as the fight goes on. My 1st round is usually my worst and I just get better from there. As long as the 1st round goes well, the 2nd and 3rd are going to be all mine. I enjoy breaking my opponents down. I like to start picking them apart. I enjoy the progress of the fight; the chess match. I like to land the strikes that matter.
PC: You were able to rock Marcus on more than one occasion. At any point, did you ever think you were going to be able to finish him?
DH: I was convinced that I was going to stop him late 2nd or early 3rd. I really didn't see it going to a decision. But the thing I realize in my fights is that when I hit somebody, I really hurt them. You could see that in the Davis fight. Pretty much everything I landed hurt him, even the knees to the body and the foot stomps and stuff. I mean, I could hear him as I was landing them. I could hear they were hurting him. That gives me the confidence that I could hurt anybody and that just makes the fights more enjoyable.
PC: If not a rematch with Davis, what would you like to do next?
DH: I don't know. I've been asked that question quite a bit in the last week or so. I have a plan and usually I kind of know who I want to be aiming for and things like that, but right now, I really don't. There are so many guys in the division that would make for a good fight. I'm kind of excited to see who the UFC will pick for me to fight next. I'm not calling anybody out, I'm not picking my fights; I'm just interested in seeing what the UFC wants to do with me. It's been a lot of names coming up on the forums and stuff with a lot of guys just hanging around just outside the top 10. I think any of them will be a good fight for me, so really, it's up to the UFC.
PC: Whoever it may be, they shouldn't underestimate you man. You have some skills. Congratulations again, I know that fight meant a lot to you. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
DH: I just want to thank everyone for watching the sport. Keep supporting the UFC and keep supporting your fighters!
