FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.: "LIL FLOYD WILL LOOK EVEN BETTER IN HIS NEXT FIGHT!"

By Percy Crawford | October 02, 2009
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.:

"I don't think anybody expected him to look that good. Let me tell you something man, this is a sport where you have to actually be in there mixing it up to stay sharp, but for Lil Floyd man, he's been doing this for so long, the layoff didn't matter; it was just rest. Once the fight got started, I knew he was going to be fine. The thing is, watch what I'm telling you now, Lil Floyd will look even better in his next fight...it ain't a fighter out there that puts in more work than my son does. I think Marquez and Pacquiao are both good fighters, but if they putting in the same amount of work as Lil Floyd, then you would have to look at skill set and neither one is on his level in that department," stated world-renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he talked more about his son's performance and much more. Check it out!

PC: Congratulations on the win against Marquez.

FM: Thank you!

PC: It was pretty much what you expected, right?

FM: Oh yeah! Lil Floyd basically did what he wanted to in there. I told you if it translated from the gym to the ring, it would look just like that.

PC: It was definitely a masterpiece. With the layoff and everything going on, maybe not so much that you thought he would lose, but did you expect him to look so sharp after that much time off?

FM: I don't think anybody expected him to look that good. Let me tell you something man, this is a sport where you have to actually be in there mixing it up to stay sharp, but for Lil Floyd man, he's been doing this for so long, the layoff didn't matter; it was just rest. Once the fight got started, I knew he was going to be fine. The thing is, watch what I'm telling you now, Lil Floyd will look even better in his next fight.

PC: Damn, that's a bold statement. You think so?

FM: Watch what I tell you Percy. This was just a warm-up.

PC: Speaking of his next fight, when would you like to see him fight again?

FM: They talking about December, but I don't know. I would like to see him stay busy though.

PC: When you take as little damage as he did against Marquez, he could fight every month.

FM: Shit, when you take that little amount of damage, he could fight every week. Shit! Floyd didn't get hit with one flush punch man. Every time the crowd got excited, he either caught it on his glove or rolled with it.

PC: You told me before the fight that the jab was going to be the key and it was. He used his jab effectively to set up the left hook and straight right hand. What made you know the jab would be an effective punch?

FM: Well, you can do so much with the jab and any time you're the better athlete in the ring, you want to use the punch that you can do a lot of things with. He walked him down, check-jab, set-jab, up-jab, I mean, he worked him with that jab. I didn't want him fighting off of the ropes and trying to pick off a lot because that's what Mexican fighters want you to do.

PC: You said the Marquez fight was a warm-up. There aren't too many fighters that could take a Juan Manuel Marquez fight as a warm-up.

FM: Well, that's what separates Floyd from other fighters. Look here man, people say what they want about distractions and all of that shit, but it ain't a fighter out there that puts in more work than my son does. I think Marquez and Pacquiao are both good fighters, but if they putting in the same amount of work as Lil Floyd, then you would have to look at skill set and neither one is on his level in that department.

PC: Pacquiao has a tough fight coming up against Miguel Cotto. I know you were high on Cotto at one point. Is that still the case?

FM: Oh yeah! I still like Cotto man. Let me tell you something man, don't be surprised if Cotto beats the shit out of Pacquiao. I'm just telling you now; you can do what you want to with that. But I wouldn't be surprised at all because one thing about it, Cotto ain't no bitch man. Cotto can fight. He beat Shane Mosley, he was beating Margarito and he beat Clottey and Clottey can fight. I think Clottey would beat Pacquiao, so I'm just telling you.

PC: Shane Mosley recently told my partner that Mayweather should be ashamed of himself for beating up a lightweight...

FM: (Cutting in) Man, he should be ashamed of himself for letting Cotto beat his ass. Mayorga was giving him all he could handle too. He should be ashamed. Man, come on man! This is the same motherfucker that said he would fight Pacquiao at 140. Man, if Shane would have fought Pacquiao at 140, he wouldn't fight again after that (laughing). Pacquiao would have beat the dog shit out of him at 140. That would have been a replay of the Oscar fight. Pacquiao would have beat up another old, dehydrated fighter.

PC: A lot of talk was about Lil Floyd coming in at 146. Can you tell us about that?

FM: Look man, anything over 141 to 147 is welterweight. These guys want to step up and fight the big boys, then they need to do that. Lil Floyd shouldn't suck himself down and take the risk of fighting dehydrated. I don't blame him. I wouldn't have sucked down to 144 and taken the chance of someone whooping my ass because I'm weak either.

PC: At the end of the fight, Nacho basically told Marquez to go out with his dignity...

FM: (Cutting in) He told Oscar that same shit. He tells all of his fighters the same thing (laughing). You will never see me tell a fighter no shit like that. I heard Oscar said that Pacquiao could never beat Lil Floyd, huh?

PC: Yeah, he did say that actually.

FM: Oscar knows man and Lil Floyd fought him at 154 and still beat the shit out of him. And Oscar has a strong left hook that can knock your ass out. What does Pacquiao have? He knocked Marquez down 3 times and still got outboxed.
