PAUL WILLIAMS: "I PLAN ON KNOCKING HIM OUT"

By Percy Crawford | October 07, 2009
PAUL WILLIAMS:

"I plan on knocking him out...They don't ever want to give me my props. And I'm glad they hyping it up like that because when I blow him out the water, what are they going to say then. When I take his big shots, what they going to say then? I'm going to make them eat them words and I love to make people eat they words," stated two-time welterweight champion Paul Williams as he talked about his upcoming highly-anticipated clash with middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. Check out what else he had to say!

PC: It's been awhile since we've spoken. How are you P?

PW: I'm doing pretty good.

PC: You finally got a fight locked down and it's the fight I know you wanted. How does it feel to have the contract done for the Pavlik fight?

PW: I'm real blessed about it man. I feel real good about this. I'm glad everything worked out. He got his hand straight and we're going to be able to get it on in the ring on December 5th.

PC: You can fluctuate between so many different weight classes. What steps do you have to take to be a strong middleweight?

PW: Really nothing too major. I just have to eat all of my meals that they feed me.

PC: So making middleweight is a process of putting on weight for you, right?

PW: Yeah, I have to put on weight. It's like when we fought Winky Wright. We were supposed to fight at 160 and we came in at like 56 or 57, so we gotta put on weight, but it's no problem.

PC: Pavlik is a lot bigger than Winky was at middleweight. Do you think his gameplan will be to try to lean on you and let his size be a factor in the fight?

PW: I expect for him to be real rough and aggressive; try to earn some respect. It ain't gonna matter.

PC: I have never seen anyone dominate Winky Wright like that. Could you assess your last performance?

PW: Yeah, I knew Winky Wright had a good jab and a good defense. My main thing was to get mine off. I wasn't worried about what he was going to do; just get mine in like I always do, you know what I'm saying? I'm going to be in control. He can block all he wants to block. I'm going to just keep firing and something will eventually get through and that's what we did.

PC: Bernard Hopkins is accurate, but he doesn't throw a lot of shots during the course of a fight and he was able to handle Kelly fairly easily. Do you think your workrate alone will be too much for him?

PW: It could be, but I don't plan on working like that. I plan on knocking him out.

PC: You have that style to where I could watch you fight every month. I know that's not the business anymore for a lot of guys and especially for you because it's so difficult getting you fights. Is that something you're hoping to change in 2010? Do you want to fight 4 or maybe 5 times next year?

PW: Oh, most definitely. I wanted to get 4 fights in this year, but we knew that wasn't going to happen; like you said, it's hard getting fights when these guys won't fight you, so it's like sitting on the shelf. That's the biggest downside in boxing is guys won't fight. They pick and choose fights.

PC: Like I said earlier, you can fight at so many different weight classes, but which is your most comfortable weight?

PW: My most comfortable weight was 147, but you know, since we got out of 47, to tell you the truth, it don't matter what weight I come in at. I will be comfortable at all of them. I kind of like the way we doing this. We're bouncing from weight class to weight class and we keeping guys on their toes. They don't know what to expect. They don't know what weight we're going to fight at, so it's keeping all of those guys that like to call people out, you know, it keeps them on the hush hush because they don't know what weight I'm going to come in at.

PC: I don't think I've ever heard anyone say your name after a fight.

PW: You aint going to hear that.

PC: At one point, people were saying you were too dehydrated at 47, but no matter what weight you fought at, you still kept your punch output very high. Is that something you train for or is it a natural gift?

PW: We work on it in the gym and it's natural. It's a gift that God gave me to be able to fight like that, you know what I'm saying? You know Mr. Peterson tunes it up for me.

PC: Not only can you fight in multiple divisions and you're over 6 feet tall, but you're also a southpaw. Do you think the whole package of Paul Williams is what keeps these other fighters quiet when speaking about you?

PW: Yeah, I'm tall and I can fight inside or outside. I can serve it to them however they want me to serve it. They can get it however they want. I will give it to them. They know that when they get in the ring with me, they're gonna fight. It aint going to be no trying to look good in there; it's going to be a fight.

PC: On the telecast of the Winky Wright fight, they were saying they didn't think you could stand up to a Pavlik shot, although we've watched you take nice shots before. Do you think that is an unfair assessment of you?

PW: Well, you know, they always going to have something to say. They don't ever want to give me my props. And I'm glad they hyping it up like that because when I blow him out the water, what are they going to say then. When I take his big shots, what they going to say then? I'm going to make them eat them words and I love to make people eat they words.

PC: I always look forward to watching you fight. I told you I think fighters like you are the cause for the pound-for-pound list. That's why it amazes me that you're not even on Ring Magazine's Top 10 list. Is there anything you want to close out with?

PW: To my fans out there, I am getting in the best shape that I possibly can to put on a good show for them. And for the people that's not my fans, it will be something that they definitely enjoy. Everybody will definitely be cheering.
