CHARIS BURRETT: "THERE IS AN UPSIDE TO BEING A WOMAN IN A MAN'S WORLD"By Percy Crawford | October 08, 2009
 |
| "I've been in the business world since I was younger, so being in business in general has its ups and downs. I would be a liar if I said that there wasn't times and places where it works to my advantage. To sit and say that it's got all of these negatives and all of these downfalls is false because there is an upside to being a woman in a man's world as well...I'm sure some people don't really realize that I have as much say or decision-making authority as I do. I'm not someone to go be loud and proud and make sure that everybody knows that, but I don't get taken advantage of either," stated Charis Burrett, Vice President and co-owner of Silver Star Casting Company, as she talked about her role with the company, the future of Silver Star and much more. Check it out!
PC: I don't know if Luke is around you, but he is one lucky man.
CB: Aw, you're sweet. Thank you! You're so sweet.
PC: How are you doing?
CB: I couldn't be better. I am doing great. How about you?
PC: Everything is going great. Thanks for asking. I have to ask you what it is like to work side-by-side with your husband in a male dominated industry?
CB: It makes me want to pull my hatchet out of my bottom drawer and go out of the office and try to chop everyone's head off (laughing). No, I'm just kidding. It's pretty normal for me. I've been in the business world since I was younger, so being in business in general has its ups and downs. I would be a liar if I said that there wasn't times and places where it works to my advantage. To sit and say that it's got all of these negatives and all of these downfalls is false because there is an upside to being a woman in a man's world as well.
PC: Have you ever run into any sexiest behavior towards you as one of the downfalls?
CB: Oh, of course. Actually, a few weeks ago, and obviously I can't mention any names, but there was someone that came in here for a meeting with Luke and he had never met either one of us before. They really didn't know a lot about us and what we did. They were running around with a video camera kind of filming some things here and there and they kind of just put the camera in my face and when I shied away, they were like, "Come on, don't be shy," and this that and the other. It actually just pretty much pissed me off. I don't know who he thought I was, but if you are going to a business to meet the owner of a company, you just don't behave like that. Obviously he didn't think I was one of the owners of the company and had he known, he wouldn't have shoved a camera in my face for the first meeting. He probably just felt like I was some chick that worked here and figured why would I care if he did that. Come to find out I was the person later in the day that gives the thumbs up or thumbs down on whether he gets the job or not. I'm sure some people don't really realize that I have as much say or decision-making authority as I do. I'm not someone to go be loud and proud and make sure that everybody knows that, but I don't get taken advantage of either.
PC: That is the perfect case of not knowing who you were messing with.
CB: (Laughing) Well, I don't mean to say it that way, but it's just when someone thinks that just because you're a woman or I look the way that I do or I dress the way that I do, that I probably don't have any authority or that I have less authority. It's probably shocking when they find out that I do (laughing).
PC: No, it's a good thing and you should be proud of that, so we'll just say they didn't know who they were messing with (laughing).
CB: I guess that's right (laughing).
PC: I understand that you are a former Playboy Playmate. Is there anything that you took away from that business that helps you be the successful business woman that you are today?
CB: I think so, for sure. I can revert back to your first question and that there are a lot of advantages to being a woman inside of a man's world. Sad but true, but when people hear there is a meeting and a Playmate is coming, it peaks people's interest and they either want to see you or meet you. It definitely opens the door and allows you to be heard. Obviously what's said after that and how you represent yourself, you're kind of on your own, but at least it's definitely gotten me into doors that may not have been available to me if I didn't have that title.
PC: You have a major role with the brand itself and I'm sure you do just about everything, but can you describe your job description with Silver Star?
CB: Of course. My title is Vice President with the company, right under my husband. He is the Chairman, CEO and President. I do everything...when Luke and I got together, the company was a very small company shipping out of a 1,000 square foot warehouse and it was us coming together and figuring out how to effectively coincide with all of the other brands out there. We had to come together and figure out how we were going to make that happen over a 5-year plan. It started from that dream and belief that we together were capable of doing that. And it's not only just dreaming, but actually believing what you have together could actually make something happen. And then just setting forth and working and doing it every day. It's like Nike says, "Just do it!" There's nothing better than just getting out there and making it happen. That worked and using both of our resources and networking with people in entertainment, music and even Playboy, we used all of the contacts I had and all of the contacts that he had and just sent out the message of what it was that we were trying to do and get the word out to as many supporters as possible. That's for the most part how it started. It kind of started from that little seed.
When you ask what do I do, I think everything from there goes into everything. I design, do creative, hiring and firing, making sure that the vision stays on track and on course, making sure that the right people are within our company have the right mindset and vision that we do for where we want to go. We're a family here and as a family, we all have to have, for the most part, the same goals in mind. It takes a lot to keep a large company and a large number of people on track with the same vision and trying to move forward in a positive way and progress. We gotta make things happen.
PC: You also play a role in getting fighters for sponsorships, so I'm sure you are into the fights. How long have you been a fan of the fights and who are some of your favorite fighters to watch?
CB: I started watching the fights about 10 years ago. If you look on some of the older videos of the UFC fights, they actually come and ask me what my picks are for the fights and they would put me on the big screen with my name as a Playmate and everything. That was like in 2003, 2004 and 2005; those years. Once you go to a couple of fights, I feel like that football fan that's got my face painted. If you watch me at a fight, I have no control. I'm not thinking that maybe people are watching me. I'm jumping out of my seat and screaming at people. I'm very into it and it is very exciting for me.
As for fighters, I love Rashad Evans. I think he's got quite a bit of charisma. He's an interesting person to watch. He's a more methodical person, he's more thought-provoked, but at the same time, he's got this kind of crotch-grabbing, in-your-face attitude (laughing). Just when you think he's down, he's got that little attitude which is always fun to watch. Machida is an amazing fighter. To me, it's like he's truly a Ninja. There are all of these different guys that are trained in so many different types of disciplines, but I don't think there is one out there that really constitutes themselves as a Ninja like Machida. He's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The guy is amazing. I can go on and on. There are so many great fighters; like Urijah Faber. He's such an amazing fighter and such a good looking guy. You look at that guy and think that he's going to go jump off of a cliff or out on a surf board in California. You don't see him as someone that is going to get in a ring and brawl like he does. He fights with broken hands and has so much charisma. These guys are true champions. You never know what you're going to get. That's what's so exciting about this sport.
PC: Most people would dread working side-by-side with their spouse, not because they hate each other but because you see each other all of the time. You guys seem to have a great relationship. Is that the case?
CB: We have truly been together every day and every night for 7 years and counting. We've never had a day or spent a night apart in 7 years. I think now, for us, it would almost be weird to be apart (laughing). We are truly best friends. There is nobody out there that I would rather be with. He's a blast, he's exciting and we're best friends; when you have nothing to hide from someone, who cares if you are with them every single day and every single night? And plus, you get sex all of the time (laughing).
PC: That's the bonus. Damn Luke. Lucky bastard (laughing). Charis, it has been a very fun interview for me. You are welcome on the site anytime. Good luck with the brand and congrats on the success you guys have already had. Is there anything you want to say in closing?
CB: Thank you so much Percy. I would love to talk to you anytime. You can call me and talk to me anytime you want.
