It was just another normal day of training for former champion Winky Wright, who's preparing for his upcoming December 11th clash with Grady Brewer. "He'll come with a lot of energy so I'll have to work that much harder," Wright stated as he insists that he's not underestimating the former Contender champion. Although Brewer is not considered to be on the same level as some of his past opponents, Wright is looking to keep himself active and in the swing of things to avoid another lengthy layoff.
Currently training back in Florida, Wright recently returned from a trip to Puerto Rico where he was on hand to promote his upcoming bout, which takes place at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan. "I was chillin' with Tito's family, playing basketball and having fun," he commented as he touched on the friendly relationship he still has with former opponent Felix "Tito" Trinidad. This will be the first of two events in the coming months for Wright's Knockout Promotions, the second taking place in January. "I have good people in place to work with, like Tony Hammel," Wright added as he discussed his decision to get more involved with promoting.
Although he now plays the role of a promoter, Wright made it clear that he still has the hunger of a fighter. "I'm looking forward to promoting fights in the future, but I still have some fighting to do," he stated. Being a former fighter turned promoter, Wright is fully aware of the politics that exist in boxing. "The networks need to stop trying to be promoters and put the fights on TV. Let the promoters do there thing and they should simply be a network," he remarked, perhaps taking a shot at HBO, given his dealings with them in the past.
Still, whether he's acting as a promoter or a fighter, Wright continues to remain a fan of the sport at heart and he's looking forward to the biggest fight of the year. "Pacquiao is explosive, but I like Cotto to win. My better half likes Pacquiao though so there's a wager in the Wright household," he joked as he shared his thoughts on this weekend's highly-anticipated clash between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto.
