PAULIE MALIGNAGGI: "THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT MANNY PACQUIAO"

By Ben Thompson | November 20, 2009
PAULIE MALIGNAGGI:

"If the situation is  what I think it is, God, Manny Pacquiao will not lose to any of these welterweight. It's unfortunate. The level we have of testing in boxing is not really that deep. I mean, we have urine tests on the day of the fight and we don't have much else...Margarito walked through Cotto, but he had to gut it out. He had to literally gut it out, grit his teeth and gut it out. Manny Pacquiao looked like he was walking in the park taking those punches, like they were pieces of paper bouncing off of him. It looked like Cotto was throwing spit balls at him...This guy came up from 118 to 122 all the way up to 147 and looked like a monster every time and he's hurting guys more as he moves up. Again, it's not a fact, but over the course of history, have you ever seen anybody in boxing history, anybody in boxing history move up in weight and hurt guys more as they move up in weight or is it the opposite," stated former jr. welterweight Paulie Malignaggi as he shared his thoughts on Manny Pacquiao's dominant win over Miguel Cotto. Malignaggi, who before the fight predicted that Cotto would defeat the Filipino icon, was a guest on the OnTheGrind Boxing Radio podcast recently and shared his thoughts on a number of subjects. Check it out!

On Manny Pacquiao's win over Miguel Cotto...

"There's something fishy about Manny Pacquiao, man, and for a lot of reasons...If the situation is  what I think it is, God, Manny Pacquiao will not lose to any of these welterweight. It's unfortunate. The level we have of testing in boxing is not really that deep. I mean, we have urine tests on the day of the fight and we don't have much else...there's things that don't come up in drug tests. There's ways to beat drug tests."

"We only have your standard urine tests here, so what are you really going to catch? What are you really going to catch if someone wants to beat it, you know what I mean? And again, I'm not saying Pacquiao is on anything. I'll repeat, I'm not saying it, but you have to look really closely at the situation because there's something very fishy about what's happening. It's not what's happening that's fishy, it's the way it's happening that's fishy. It's the way it's happening that's fishy."

"Even Margarito, when he was walking through Miguel Cotto's firepower, you could see the pain on him. Like, he had to gut it out, you know what I mean? There's nothing wrong with gutting out. There's guys that Miguel Cotto hasn't knocked out. There's guys who have gone 12 rounds with Cotto and lost, like Shane Mosley even, you know, and even Margarito walked through Cotto, but he had to gut it out. He had to literally gut it out, grit his teeth and gut it out. Manny Pacquiao looked like he was walking in the park taking those punches, like they were pieces of paper bouncing off of him. It looked like Cotto was throwing spit balls at him, you know what I mean? Even Margarito, who walked through punches, had to go through hell and fire to get through those punches and eventually wear down Cotto. And that's a full-blown welterweight. That's a full-blown welterweight. This is a guy coming up in weight doing those things. Margarito didn't even hurt Cotto every time he touched him. Nobody hurt Cotto every time he touched him. Not even full-blown, powerful welterweights. We're talking about full-blown, powerful welterweights. We're not talking about half in the middle range welterweights. We're talking about full-blown, powerful, top 5, world-rated world championship welterweights were not doing this to Miguel Cotto. This guy did all these things to Miguel Cotto. And that's just the boxing point of view. That's just the boxing perspective. Like I said, there's other things you can look at."

"Again, it's not a fact, but over the course of history, have you ever seen anybody in boxing history, anybody in boxing history move up in weight and hurt guys more as they move up in weight or is it the opposite? Or is it the opposite, that when guys move up in weight, they have to rely more on their boxing abilities than the power to win fights. What has it been? What has the course of history shown us? The course of history has shown us that as you move up in weight, guys are used to getting hit by bigger men, so your power will no longer affect opponents as it did in your own weight class, so you gotta rely on your boxing ability to be successful. Manny Pacquiao is the first guy in history, and he might be the special thing that everybody says he is, he might be, the first guy in history to go up in weight and knock out more people as he goes up in weight than he did when he was smaller. He might be that special person. Me, I think that looks a little fishy. I think that's a little bit fishy."

"Over the course of history, have you ever seen anybody go up in weight and get stronger and knock people out...nobody in the course of history has ever been able to do that...at the end of the day, Pacquiao took some clean shots. Like I said, his eardrum got ruptured. You have to get hit pretty hard to get your eardrum ruptured, you know what I mean, and the fact that he didn't react at all? Nothing? As a matter of fact, he got stronger? I don't know. I don't know. Like I said, it's going to get debated forever. I know a lot of people are going to hate what I think. But it's just what I think. I'm not telling anybody that it's fact."
