HAROLD LEDERMAN: "FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN OF MANNY PACQUIAO...IT SHOULD BE SENSATIONAL"

By Ben Thompson | November 23, 2009
HAROLD LEDERMAN:

"Once they have some sort of an agreement on how the money is going to be split up, then they can start working on how many pay-per-view homes they're going to sell, which really is the indicator of how much money he [Mayweather] is going to wind up making. It's not what his guarantee is, it's how many pay-per-view homes he sells. That's the determinating factor in that. I think it should do really, really well based on the last couple of fights...From what I've seen of Manny Pacquiao lately, it's hard to envision it not being a great fight. I just think that based on styles and just the way these two guys fight, it should be sensational. I mean, they're just two great fighters. There's a lot of hand speed there, there's a lot of power there on either side; it seems like it's going to be a sensational fight. I'm really looking forward to it," stated HBO's unofficial scorer Harold Lederman as he talked about the possibility of Manny Pacquiao facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2010. Lederman was a guest on the OnTheGrind Boxing Radio podcast recently and shared his thoughts on a number of subjects, including Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, Mosley vs. Berto, Williams vs. Martinez, Andre Ward's dominant win over Mikkel Kessler and much more. Check it out!

On Manny Pacquiao's win over Miguel Cotto...

"I was shocked. Unbelievable performance by Manny Pacquiao. I just didn't think he was going to win so impressively, but he did."

"I thought it was a very excited fight while it lasted. Personally, I thought it should have been stopped a couple of rounds earlier. I mean, there's just no sense in letting Cotto take the kind of beating he took late in the fight when you knew he didn't have any chance to win whatsoever and he was doing nothing but running away and getting beat up, but be as it may, Manny Pacquiao certainly showed he can punch with those big guys and, you know, now everybody wants to see Floyd Mayweather, so we'll see how it plays out."

On a potential clash between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr....

"It's hard to remember when there was ever a situation like this where you wanted to see two guys fight so bad. I mean, you know, it's just one of these fight where it seems everybody wants to see it. It's not like there are 10 guys lined up to fight Manny Pacquiao. Everybody is saying,  'We don't want to see anybody else. We want to see Floyd!' I guess it's a fight that really has to be made."

"You know, I don't know, as I see the situation, after they agree upon the money, whatever it is, 50/50, or 65/35, or 60/40 or however they're going to split up the money, I think everything else is going to fall in place. I think everything else is unimportant, you know, the location, size of the ring, brand of boxing gloves, anything you can name. I think the money is the most important thing and I think once they agree upon that, everything else is easy to put together."

I think it should do really, really well based on the last couple of fights, Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez and  Pacquiao-Cotto. I mean, if these two fights sold the way they sold, there's no reason why Floyd and Manny can't sell a record number of homes, that's for sure."

"From what I've seen of Manny Pacquiao lately, it's hard to envision it not being a great fight. I just think that based on styles and just the way these two guys fight, it should be sensational. I mean, they're just two great fighters. There's a lot of hand speed there, there's a lot of power there on either side; it seems like it's going to be a sensational fight. I'm really looking forward to it."

On the upcoming clash between Shane Mosley and Andre Berto...

"Without question, I think it's going to be a very interesting fight. Like you say, it's a real good veteran against a good kid on the way up. Andre Berto certainly is fast, he's got good power; defensively, he's not an easy guy to fight...Sugar Shane Mosley, it's a shame that he waited so long after that great win over Margarito to get back in the ring. I just hope his skills haven't eroded at all."
