DEVON ALEXANDER: "IF MAIDANA IS SCARED, BRING ON URANGO!"

By Ben Thompson | December 24, 2009
DEVON ALEXANDER:

"If Maidana is scared, bring on Urango. I want to unify the division anyway, so why not start with Urango," stated WBC jr. welterweight champion Devon Alexander as he shared his willingness to unify his title with IBF jr. welterweight champion Juan Urango. Originally, there were talks of Alexander facing Marcos Maidana, however, it appears Maidana will instead enforce his mandatory ranking in hopes of facing WBA jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan.

Earlier today, Juan Urango's promoter, Warriors Boxing, sent out a press release expressing his desire to unify his IBF title with any of the other champions, including Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley and Devon Alexander. "I implore the HBO and Showtime television networks to get behind a series of fights that will result in a unified, undisputed Champion," Urango stated in the press release. "I think the fans deserve to find out who is the best at 140lbs. I call out the other champions to help me unify the titles in our weight class and give boxing fans a holiday present they deserve."

Upon hearing this news, Alexander quickly contacted FightHype.com to inform us that he's more than happy to take Urango's challenge. In fact, Alexander already has a March 6th date on HBO and, considering the fact that Urango was previously approved by the network as an opponent for WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto, surely they won't have a problem approving Urango for a fight against another WBC champion in his own weight class. "I've got a title and I've got a date, March 6th on HBO, so if Urango is ready to unify, let's do it. If Arreola can fight Brian Minto on HBO World Championship Boxing, then a title unification between myself and Urango would be a great fit for HBO Boxing After Dark," Alexander added. "I'm in the gym right now on Christmas Eve staying sharp. Urango wants to unify, I want to unify, we have a date and a network, so let's do it!"

Two titles, two fighters willing to face each other, a network and a date...Alexander vs. Urango, March 6th on HBO Boxing After Dark...surely this fight should be a lot easier for HBO to make than some other fights I can think of.
