Sources close to the situation have just informed us that undefeated multi-division champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. still intends to fight on the March 13th date that was originally being held for his highly-anticipated clash with Manny Pacquiao. "Yep," replied one source when asked if Mayweather would indeed be figthing in March. "March 13th at the MGM," added another source, who made it clear that they already have a date and a venue, but have yet to consider any potential oppponents.
Although Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer recently stated that Mayweather was open to the possibility of facing WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley, it appears that he doesn't plan on waiting around for the outcome of Mosley's upcoming title unification with Andre Berto. Having last fought in September of 2009, Mayweather would prefer to return to the ring sooner rather than later in order to stay sharp. As of now, it's unclear as to who Mayweather will actually return against. Welterweight Matthew Hatton and jr. welterweight Paulie Malignaggi have been rumored to be possible opponents, however, Team Mayweather maintains that no opponents have been considered thus far.
The bout will definitely take place on pay-per-view, which likely means the involvement of HBO. This latest news means that both Mayweather and Pacquiao will be going head-to-head in dueling pay-per-view events, as promoter Bob Arum just finalized a deal for Pacquiao to face Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium on the same date.
