RON FRAZIER: "RANDY HAS ADDED A LOT MORE TO HIS GAME THAN PEOPLE THINK"

By Percy Crawford | January 26, 2010
RON FRAZIER:

"We thought the fight between Randy and Coleman should have happened like 12 years ago and then Coleman lost a match. Randy has added a lot more to his game than people think…his ground game and submission game is more in depth than people give him credit for and I think you might see that in this fight…I asked Randy how it feels to fight a guy that's not young enough to be his son and he's kind of relishing that. He's always wanted to get in there with a guy like Coleman. Mark is a big strong guy and obviously he wants to bring it in this fight, but it's going to be a good, fun match," stated Xtreme Couture boxing coach Ron Frazier as he talked about Randy Couture's upcoming clash with Mark Coleman at UFC 109. Check it out!

PC: Xtreme Couture has been on a roll lately. Evan Dunham had a great submission win over Efrain Escudero and Gray Maynard won a hard-fought decision over Nate Diaz. What do you think of some of the recent performances from your team?

RF: We had 9 amateurs fight a couple days before that UFC card and they went 7-2. Amir Sadollah trains at Xtreme Couture as well and he looked really well in beating Brad Blackburn and then Evan; Evan is a great fighter. People don't know about this kid yet. He just came to the UFC. As a matter of fact, he hasn't even been there a full year yet. He's had 3 fights and he's getting better and better each time out. But he practices with the likes of Gray Maynard and Tyson Griffin on a daily basis. The funny thing is when Gray Maynard had his first fight ever as an amateur, it was against Evan Dunham. He beat him as an amateur and no one knew it until fight time. Evan decided that for his career to get to the next level, he would move down to Las Vegas and he's doing real well. I expect big things out of him. He's a really good, young fighter and he's just learning his craft, so I think the more seasoned he gets and the more he gets in the cage, he's going to do really well.

Gray made the fight a little tougher than he had to. He got caught up in the head games of Nate Diaz saying nobody would stand with him and I think he could have taken him down a little bit more. But he got the win and I thought it was a little bit more comfortable than the judges saw it. But when you leave it in their hands, those things happen, so no worries there. He's still undefeated and he's moving on. We will wait and see what happens with Frankie Edgar against BJ Penn and we'll kind of just sit back and wait.

PC: You also have Randy Couture coming up as well as Frank Trigg. How are those guys looking in camp? In Trigg's case, this may be his last chance.

RF: The thing with Frank is to get back to the basics; get back to that wrestler's mentality and do all of the little things that he used to do that he's gotten away from. We're not going to worry about the little things, like if this is his last fight. We're just preparing him to do the best he can on February 6th. I think he will be victorious and we will move on from there. I told him in his last fight that he's closer to the end of his career than he is the beginning, so enjoy it. He's in a position where he's a fan favorite now. He used to play the villain role, so now he can enjoy the fans and enjoy the fact that people are cheering him on and not booing. But just have a good time with it and see where it goes from there.

We thought the fight between Randy and Coleman should have happened like 12 years ago and then Coleman lost a match. Randy has added a lot more to his game than people think. I know he got submitted a couple of times early in his career and now people think that he has no submission defense. Obviously he showed against Jacare, in that submission grappling tournament, that he can do some things there. We have guys like Mario Sperry, Robert Drysdale and Jeff Monson come through our gym and Randy is like a sponge. He's also worked with Dean Lister, so his ground game and submission game is more in depth than people give him credit for and I think you might see that in this fight. And the thing that allows him to fight at this age is one, he's enjoying it and two, he just keeps putting more tools in his tool belt. As long as he is doing that and he stays healthy, he's going to be around. I asked Randy how it feels to fight a guy that's not young enough to be his son and he's kind of relishing that. He's always wanted to get in there with a guy like Coleman. Mark is a big strong guy and obviously he wants to bring it in this fight, but it's going to be a good, fun match.
