"We've had some good, hard training. I've had some good sparring. My whole team is doing a wonderful job and everyone has provided such great support. I couldn't be happier! I'll be ready to go for April 30...I'm ready to take care of business...The Ghost is back," stated former super featherweight champion Robert Guerrero as he discussed his upcoming April 30 return to the ring. Having last fought in August of 2009, Guerrero took a break from the sport, instead spending time with his wife, who has been battling cancer, and helping the Leukemia Society, who nominated him for Man of the Year. Check out what he had to say as he Robert shares his thoughts about the 135-pound division, the status of his wife's fight against cancer and much more.
MJ: First off, and most importantly, how is your wife doing?
RG: She's doing great; having a great recovery. I'm happy with the way that everything is going with her. She's doing very well, on track and doing great.
MJ: That's awesome. We've been praying for your family.
RG: We truly appreciate all the prayers. We do believe in the power of prayer. The support and love we're getting from the fans has been amazing. It really has been touching.
MJ: As far as your training for the upcoming fight against Roberto David Arrieta, how is everything going?
RG: We've had some good, hard training. I've had some good sparring. My whole team is doing a wonderful job and everyone has provided such great support. I couldn't be happier! I'll be ready to go for April 30.
MJ: That's great. Yeah, that's the night before the Mayweather-Mosley fight. Who do you like in that one?
RG: It's going to be a good fight. I'm leaning towards Shane Mosley. Having sparred with him and with him helping me out, I know what he can do. I'm excited to see him back in the ring.
MJ: What can you tell us about your opponent?
RG: He's a solid guy who comes to fight. I studied a little bit of film on him and he can fight. I'll be making that move up to 135 and we'll see how it goes. I feel great and I can't wait!
MJ: With you campaigning at 135, how do you feel adding that additional weight?
RG: I feel good. I feel strong and fast; my body feels a lot better. I think it's going to be a good move.
MJ: In this new division, not counting yourself, how would you rank the top fighters at lightweight?
RG: You have to go with Marquez at number one. He's a tremendous fighter; a future Hall-of-Famer. After that, I'd have to say Juan Diaz. Humberto Soto is up there; there are so many good fighters. I'm just happy to be up there at that weight class.
MJ: After this fight, which boxer will be your next target?
RG: I'm looking for the big fight. Hopefully, I can get a Marquez fight. There's also the Soto fight. I couldn't get the fights at 130 or at featherweight, so maybe I can get those fights at 135, now that I've moved up. I'm happy to be there and I just can't wait. Hopefully I can get any one of the champions, but Marquez is for sure the one that I want. I would love to get a Marquez fight. He's going to be in the Hall of Fame and I want to share the ring with him. But first things first, I'm ready to take care of business on April 30.
MJ: Can you tell us about some of the foundations that you have going on outside of the ring?
RG: We're working with the Leukemia Society, raising money. We're campaigning for them now. It's nice to be able to do good work for them and raise awareness for leukemia with the platform that I have. It's awesome to be in my shoes right now.
MJ: Is there anything else you'd like to say to the FightHype.com fans in closing?
RG: The Ghost is back! Tune in to my fight April 30; Solo Boxeo is kicking off their new season. Also, we're raising money for research on leukemia and also for kids; it often comes to children. Any way that I can help, or others can help, is much appreciated.
