Midway through the 11th round of Saturday's welterweight showdown between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley, FightHype.com received a phone call from future Hall of Famer James "Lights Out" Toney, who was thoroughly impressed with what he was witnessing inside the ring. "I got one word for what's going on: masterful," he stated. It was a rare compliment from Toney, who believes that most fighters today aren't worthy of such praise given the manner in which they fight.
"If you see Floyd out there, tell him he's served Michigan and Detroit well. That was a masterful performance by Floyd. Now that's old school fighting," continued Toney, paying homage to the fact that both he and Mayweather are Michigan natives that fight with a similar old school style. Also known for his defensive wizardry, Toney was not surprised that Mayweather got caught with a shot, but he believes that he handled the situation like a true champion, stating, "That's what happens in boxing. I don't care how good your defense is. Eventually, you're going to have to see how you adjust after being tagged. Mayweather handled it like a champ. He shook it off like a pitbull and that's what champions do."
Naturally, Toney's message was passed on to Team Mayweather.
