FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.: "I KNEW SHANE WOULD WEAR DOWN"

By Percy Crawford | May 05, 2010
FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR.:

"He has always fought like that. If you go back and watch his fights, he always fought very jittery, but he was worse than I have ever seen him Saturday night and that's because Floyd Mayweather was in front of him. It's a different ball game when Floyd Mayweather is in front of you...I thought he would come out cautious and be careful for a few rounds, but he jumped right in Shane's ass man. I think that's what took the fight out of Shane. Man, to be honest with you man, I knew Shane would wear down. When you doing all of that with your hands and fighting tight and jittery like that, man, you're going to exhaust yourself," stated world-renowned trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he talked about his son's dominant and lopsided victory over Shane Mosley this past weekend. Check out what he had to say about the fight, Floyd's future plans and much more.

PC: Congratulations on the win.

FM: Thank you.

PC: On one episode of 24/7, you stated that Shane would fight jitterier than ever before, and he did. What made you sense that?

FM: He has always fought like that. If you go back and watch his fights, he always fought very jittery, but he was worse than I have ever seen him Saturday night and that's because Floyd Mayweather was in front of him. It's a different ball game when Floyd Mayweather is in front of you. Those people talking about my son scared of Antonio Margarito, man, get the fuck outta here man. What do you think Floyd would have done to Margarito if Mosley was able to destroy him?

PC: I know you're not Mosley's advisor or anything, but what do you think he should do from here?

FM: I think Shane should retire man. He's been fighting a long time and although there are some guys he could still beat, they ain't Floyd Mayweather Jr. and mentally, he may never recover from what happened to him Saturday. I mean, there is nothing wrong with losing, but it's how you lose. He pretty much took a one-sided ass whoopin' man. I'm just sayin'.

PC: Floyd got hit with a flush shot in the 2nd round. Were you a little nervous when you saw his legs buckle?

FM: Yeah man. I'm human and that's my son. I don't want to see anything happen to him, so yeah, I was nervous, but he weathered the storm and came back to the corner and took instruction from Roger and then asked me what I wanted him to do. I told him, "Stay in the center of the ring, tighten up your defense on the ropes and be smart." And that's it. That's all he had to do.

PC: Floyd actually came out more aggressive in the 3rd round than Shane did.

FM: Yeah, and I was a little surprised by that. I thought he would come out cautious and be careful for a few rounds, but he jumped right in Shane's ass man. I think that's what took the fight out of Shane. Man, to be honest with you man, I knew Shane would wear down. When you doing all of that with your hands and fighting tight and jittery like that, man, you're going to exhaust yourself.

PC: I see a lot of Shane Mosley fights up here on your TV. What was it like breaking him down?

FM: It's actually the 3rd time I have had to break him down. I broke him down in the rematch with Oscar, of course for Lil Floyd, and I was doing some work with Zab Judah when he was supposed to fight Shane. It's the same shit man. He don't have good defense, he's never had a jab and if you keep a jab in his face, he doesn't move his head and that's what we did. Honestly, I have never seen Shane jab as much as he did against my son, but he just don't put anything on them.

PC: How much longer would you like to see Lil' Floyd fight?

FM: Only a couple of more fights. Floyd's 33 years old himself. Lil' Floyd trains hard man. He didn't put on any weight overnight; that's how hard he trains. So I would only like to see him do that to his body a couple of more times. Not that the weight is an issue. Lil' Floyd makes the weight easy, but his camps are tough man.

PC: The stars were out for that fight for sure my man.

FM: Yeah man, I was sitting in front of Diddy. I talked to him the entire fight. I didn't know who he was. Somebody told me and we talked the entire fight. He's a good guy. Right before the fight, he said, "Floyd about to put a beatdown on Shane." I don't really listen to that kind of music, but he was cool man.

PC: James Toney called me during the 11th round and said the performance was masterful and that Floyd represented Detroit well.

FM: That's what James Toney said?

PC: Yep.

FM: Toney and Floyd fight a lot alike. They are two rare fighters that can fight with that style and look comfortable doing it. That's truly an old school style where you don't get hit flush. I don't think Bernard Hopkins has that style as much as people like to say he does. He's more straight up and down.

PC: Who do you like Saturday night between Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams?

FM: I don't really see shit in Paul Williams man, to be honest with you. He will probably beat Cintron, but I just don't see anything special in him.

PC: I appreciate the invite into your home. It has been great hanging out with you as always. Congrats on the win again; it was a great performance.

FM: Thank you Percy. Any time man.
