If both Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez win their upcoming fights, and Morales is able to make 135 pounds, which is a big if, expect the two to face off for Marquez's Lightweight title by next Spring. Since losing a decision to David Diaz three years ago, followed by a brief retirement, Morales has been on the comeback trail and is desperately trying to win the Mexican holy grail, a title in a fourth weight class.
Morales has yet to find success in the Lightweight division since coming up short against David Diaz in 2006, yet should he defeat Willie Limond in a Junior Welterweight fight, he will somehow be given mandatory contender status for Marquez's title courtesy of the idiots from the WBC. While Marquez is no spring chicken at 37 years of age, Morales is the more worn fighter in boxing years, despite being in his early 30's, and shouldn't give Marquez too much trouble.
Before anyone gets too excited, however, let's not put all of our eggs in one basket on this one. Marquez still has to get past a very dangerous opponent in Michael Katsidis. Not to mention, even if they're both victorious, Morales would still have to make the weight, which we're not certain he can even do. If we do ever get to see it, it should be fun while it lasts though. After all, these two are the last fighters to give Manny Pacquiao a run for his money, with Morales being the last fighter to ever beat him.
