The trailer for the Micky Ward biopic "The Fighter" was released last week. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as the Irish boxer who made up one half of the classic Gatti-Ward trilogy. On the surface, it looks to be another typical "underdog boxer struggles through hardships to make it to the top" boxing flick that we tend to get every few years or so, but the main focus on this one seems to be the complex, and often volatile, relationship between Micky Ward and his half-brother Dickie Eklund, played by Christian Bale. David O. Russell directs, who previously had success with films like "Three Kings"and "Flirting with Disaster."
[SPOILER ALERT]
One thing worth noting: rumor has it that the film ends just before Ward's first fight with Arturo Gatti. If that's the case, it would leave out an awful lot of what made Ward so special to his fans. IMDB.com seems to suggest this may be the case, as there is no cast listing for Arturo Gatti in the movie. It's hard to imagine a Micky Ward movie that doesn't shed light on the epic wars he went through with Gatti or their special friendship that came from it, but hopefully the writers have included enough to satisfy both boxing fans and casual filmgoers alike.
