NATE CAMPBELL: "I WANT TO FINISH WHAT I STARTED AT 135"

By Elvers Brooks | October 05, 2010
NATE CAMPBELL:

"I'm going back to 135. I can put my foot down. I can run now. If the right opportunity comes, I will go back to 140, but I want to finish what I started at 135. I didn't get a chance to positively do what I wanted at 135," stated former lightweight champion Nate Campbell as he talked about his future plans, including a move back down to the lightweight division in hopes of regaining his titles. Check it out!

EB: How you been?

NC: I'm good man. Back in the gym having a good time.

EB: Are we going to see you back in the ring again

NC: Oh yeah. I'll probably be back in the ring in November. I have no idea against who though.

EB: I heard you are preaching. Are you going deeper into the ministry with your own church?

NC: Oh yeah. I was ordained at 22. I preach all the time. I'm finally working with my calling. Boxing is still a big part of my life, big part of who I am, but my call to God is very important to me. I'm already in the ministry; I don't have to wait. If God moves me, then that is how I move. I may be an evangelist, I don't know.

EB: Last fight out, you weren't the Nate Campbell many are used to seeing.  I heard you had a sciatic nerve issue.

NC: Oh man, that was a sad thing too. Oh my God, that was horrible. I wasn't the real Nate Campbell; I was the Nate Campbell of pinched sciatic nerve. I mean, I was never hurt and I definitely didn't get knocked down, but that doesn't matter because that is what they counted it as.

EB: So is everything better? Are you healed up?

NC: Man, I spar 6-8 rounds a day. I'm doing good stuff right in the gym. I was down at Roy Jones' ranch the other week sparring, so you know I'm back in the swing of things.

EB: What weight? I know you had been at 140, but I heard you wanted to go back to 135.

NC: I'm going back to 135. I can put my foot down. I can run now. If the right opportunity comes, I will go back to 140, but I want to finish what I started at 135. I didn't get a chance to positively do what I wanted at 135.

EB: Who you looking to get in the ring at 135?

NC: Whoever! I never really cared. You know how I feel; they can all get it.

EB: No, you never ducked anyone.

NC: Nope. I will fight any one of them. Any one of them!  One thing about me, I'm not one of those guys that picks and chooses. You put them in the ring and they all can get it.

EB: Yeah, we know you come with it. That's why I wanted to see what you were up to after your last fight and with your injury. Can you tell us a little bit more about your injury, for those that don't know much about it?

NC: Let me tell you something, a lot of people don't understand, that was the worst I ever felt in my life. I would've rather pulled my own teeth with no novocaine. I walked back to my corner on more than one occasion wiping tears from my eyes. It feels like it is your back, but at the same time, it hurts in your hip. Then, at the same time, it hurts in your leg. My whole right leg was numb.

EB: So it kept you from planting your feet and throwing power punches?

NC: Yeah, and I couldn't cut off Ortiz. I couldn't cut him off.  I mean, when I did, he would just move away. When I hit him, I hurt him, but other than that, I couldn't hit him. It hurt me more to move away than just take his punches. I was doing all I could. It was something I wanted...sometimes your body just can't do it and the pain was more than my body could take. I am definitely ready to get back in the ring and definitely ready to do my job.

EB: What date you fighting?

NC: Not sure what date. I am just looking forward to getting back in the ring. I'm looking forward to doing my job.

EB: So you going back to become undisputed at lightweight? I mean, I know you coming to take what you want.

NC: Always! That's all I want. I don't understand how guys fight like that. Like they make a silent deal with the other guy; if you don't do this to me, I won't do that to you. Naw, naw, naw, let's get to fighting and see what happens. I don't do the wait around and see deal. I want to get to fighting. No sense in playing games.

EB: Many had bet against you when you fought Juan Diaz, but you beat him down and almost made him quit.

NC: Yeah, you know how they are. They build these guys and try to make these guys stars. Let's just try letting these guys deal with it on their own.

EB: Would you like a rematch with Victor Ortiz? Or do you want to get Tim Bradley back in the ring?

NC: Oh yeah, I definitely would. I will fight any of these guys, but I am not going to chase them. I'm not waiting on anybody.

EB: Anything else you want to say in closing?

NC: I want to thank everyone for the love and support. I thank the haters the most. They keep me going.
