JESSE BRINKLEY: "12 ROUNDS OR LESS...HE WILL BRING OUT THE NASTY IN ME"

By Elvers Brooks | October 11, 2010
JESSE BRINKLEY:

"There is no pressure on me. I have nothing to lose; in great great physical condition and I'm going up there to let it all hang out.  12 rounds or less...I really truly believe maybe more than once I can see this being like a Barrera-Morales type of fight. You know, a dogfight. I mean, I'm no walk in the park for anyone I fight. I think he will bring out the nasty in me. He is going to bring out the animal in me somewhere," stated super middleweight contender Jesse Brinkley as he talked about his upcoming title challenge against IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. Check it out!

EB: How are you doing? You got the biggest fight of your career in front of you.

JB: Everything is wonderful, good, no complaints. Not even one.  Physically, everything feels great. Everything physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally, financially is great. The best it has ever been in my life.

EB: That's great! So you are going to Bute's hometown to fight him.

JB: Yeah, that's exciting. That's cool to me. I would want it no other way. No other way! There is no pressure on me. I have nothing to lose; in great great physical condition and I'm going up there to let it all hang out.  12 rounds or less.

EB: Right on. We both know the world is counting you out. You said you have no worries. What do you see or think that makes you know that you can take him out?

JB: Let me see, how can I explain it? The fact that he has five toes on each foot, five fingers on each hand, he bleeds red and his heart pumps blood, that's what makes me prove that he's beatable. He's a man, just like I am; ties his shoes just like I do, has a voice just like me. He is no different than me. He is no different than any other human and it's just what human shows up that night. It's going to be me versus him. Who is going to rise to the occasion? Well, he rises every fight to the occasion so it automatically brings out the best in me and I'm a very competitive person, so it's a fight. It's a fight and whatever happens, happens. If I go up there and I win, I say whatever you put into life, you will get out of life. If I go up there and I don't win, I will never look back and say I didn't give it my all. I know I went up there 100% prepared and the better man won that night.

EB: Yeah, I know this is a long road for you. We all remember you from the Contender.  You were a fan favorite then, so it's awesome to see you going for your goal of a world title.

JB: (Laughs) Yeah, although I got to face the biggest and baddest monster there. I don't get some old man, I get some young, killer, big ol' southpaw in his hometown is what I get for my first world title fight. But I'm telling you, it's awesome. It's a storybook ending for me. Opinions right now don't matter in my mind because I know what I'm doing to sparring partners. I know what I'm doing to guys when I actually fight them with real gloves on. I know what my capabilities are, I know what my chins like, I know what my condition is like, I know what kind of person I'm like. But this fight is somewhat different. I think this fight will test my manhood, meaning somewhere in the fight, I really truly believe maybe more than once I can see this being like a Barrera-Morales type of fight. You know, a dogfight. I mean, I'm no walk in the park for anyone I fight. I think he will bring out the nasty in me. He is going to bring out the animal in me somewhere. Fuck it I have nothing to lose man. Fuck it. Straight up, nothing to lose. Nothing! I'm not in front of my fans in Reno and Yearington. I have nothing to lose. I'm going for that big red belt.  His 0 has got to go. That's why I put 10 weeks in this camp in preparation to give it my all that night and somewhere in there, my all has to be good enough.  It has to be. I've never been denied when I've given it my all.

EB: Well, you sound like you are in great condition and very confident and that's the attitude you need in order to go to his hometown and win.

JB: And I already know what I am up against. I am up against a big left-handed monster. I already know this. No one has to tell me this. I totally respect everything that he has to offer. I'm not going to show him too much respect, and if I disrespect what he has, he will put my head 5 rows deep, so I got to bite down and be the man I need to be that night. In all 40 professional fights, I've been all over the world to fight. I've been to the big shows and fought, been to the big shows and lost those, and I don't really feel like I've been beat because a better man beat me. I feel like I lost to some bullshit. Hopefully, everything shows up that night and we go for it just right. I'm fucking stoked for this moment. I'll be honest, I'm stoked. I got a great team, I'm matured mentally, I'm matured physically, and if I wait any longer, more gray will be on my neck and in my fucking pee hairs and I will be too old for the moment (laughs). I have nothing to lose.

EB: You sound confident, like you can go over to Montreal and handle your business no problem.

JB: I'm hitting hard; I'm sharp. I can go 12 rounds. I'm anything and everything. If this guy to go in there and think he can just dominate me and beat me up, then he is lying to himself and his team is lying to him. For him to think I'm too small for him, and he is too big, well he only has me on height and shoe size, so big fucking deal.

EB: Bute is relatively quiet. He isn't talking smack like Curtis Stevens was.

JB: Man, I didn't know what to expect from Curtis Stevens. I know what to expect from an undefeated world champion.  What do you always expect to see from an undefeated world champion? Their best, their greatest. Curtis, I had no idea what I was going to get from him. He kinda weirded me out. I already know what to expect from Lucian; a monster, a damn nightmare. I have prepared and built myself mentally and physically for the roughest night I can actually engage in and I'm willing to attack him that night. I'm willing to go with it. With Curtis, I had no clue what to expect and I was expecting someone who's supposed to come in and blow me out and well, you see how that went. In that fight, I didn't take any chances, but in this fight, I'm willing to take chances. I took no chances with Curtis Stevens. The few times I exchanged punches, I just pulled away after the combinations, then at the bell, I did it. Even when I hurt him, I was cautious. I didn't want to get caught with Curtis because I knew once I hurt him, I knew that was when he was most dangerous. You corner a big cat, then you go try to grab that sucker.  Not me. No way, you know what I mean? They are fucking dangerous. Once you get a hurt animal, that desperation takes over and it's scary.

EB: Well, I know you are busy and I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me.

JB: Yeah, I'm headed out to Canada tomorrow morning. I'm going up there to train in their gyms for a few days, do a couple press conferences, lock myself in the room and bite down.

EB: Well, we wish you the best of luck and I want to hear from you after you win the belt.

JB: Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
