ROBERT GUERRERO: "THIS IS THE STEPPING STONE AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A GREAT FIGHT"

By Percy Crawford | October 15, 2010
ROBERT GUERRERO:

"He's going to feel me out and then see which way works best for him. I will have to go with the game plan that we have and if it's not working, then we will have to switch it up. I'm sure he's going to be well prepared and have a couple of game plans of his own. This is a big fight for both of us to get to that next step to compete with a Marquez or Soto. This is the stepping stone and we're going to have a great fight. I know he's bringing a few game plans and he's going to be ready and I'm excited about that. I'm excited to know that he's out there training hard and we're going to go out there and do our best," stated lightweight contender Robert Guerrero as he talked about his upcoming November 6th clash with Vicente Escobedo. Check it out!

PC: How is everything going Ghost?

RG: Everything is going good. I'm just training hard and getting ready.

PC: Vicente Escobedo is not a very old guy, but much like you, he's been in with some tough guys. He has a ton of experience. How do you see this fight going?

RG: It's going to be a good fight. Vic has a lot of experience. He's been in there with a lot of good fighters, he has a lot of amateur experience and he's been in the Olympics. I think he's going to be ready to go and I'm going to be 100% ready for him. It's going to be a great fight, but I see myself winning this fight.

PC: How is camp going?

RG: It's going great. I've been sparring with some 154 pounders and they have been giving me great work. They are providing what I need and everything is going good. Training camp is going good and I've been training hard and doing everything I have to do to be prepared. We're putting our game plan together and breaking down tapes. Everything is going great, we're right on schedule and on fight night, we're going to be ready.

PC: Although you went through a lot with your wife's struggle with cancer, you still managed to fight 4 times last year and this will be your third fight this year. How important is it for you to remain busy and how have you balanced it with your situation at home?

RG: Having her as my backbone and having her support me has made me a stronger person mentally and spiritually. I'm by her side and she's by mine and we're able to balance it out by having a lot of faith in God and taking everything day by day. That's how we get through the day and fights. We balance it out well. I'm excited that this is my third fight and it's important to stay busy, keep boxing, keep my tools sharp and stay in the circle.

PC: This is a very important month [Breast Cancer Awareness month] for your wife. I'm sure she has an active role in bringing awareness. Are you able to contribute to some of the things she's doing right now or are you strictly focusing on your fight right now?

RG: My wife has been doing a lot of fundraising and she will be in San Jose doing things as well. But for me, it's focusing on getting ready for this fight and making sure I'm prepared and there ain't no stones unturned come fight night.

PC: You are riding a 4-fight winning streak. You are one of those guys that steadily improves every time out. What do you credit for those continuous improvements?

RG: Just going out there and fighting good fighters; fighting the best and assessing yourself. I work on the things that I need to work on to improve my game and I stay in good shape year round. So you're not working to make the weight. You're working to improve your boxing skills and to be ready at all times. All of that comes into play when bettering yourself as a professional and carrying yourself that way.

PC: You're only 27, but you have been on televised events for a long time now. You have to feel fortunate to be back on HBO to display your skills.

RG: Definitely, and I credit God, who has blessed me with everything that I have been blessed with. God blessing me with a great management team, great promotional team and PR to get these fights on TV and to do big things in boxing. Your face has to be seen and I thank God that I've always had the opportunity to be fighting on national TV.

PC: We know you can slug it out or box because we've seen both styles. Are you expecting Escobedo to come right at you, or wait on you to make a mistake and try to counter your mistakes?

RG: I think he's gonna try both. He's going to feel me out and then see which way works best for him. I'm excited to know that he's out there training hard and we're going to go out there and do our best.

PC: He has never been stopped before. Is that something you're aiming to do or think you may have an opportunity for doing during the fight?

RG: Everything is a possibility. In boxing, one punch can change everything and it can be done. I'm preparing to go the distance, but if it comes, it comes and I will capitalize on it and take advantage of it. God willing, everything goes good and I come out victorious. It will be even better to get the win by knockout, but most of the time, when you go out there expecting it, it doesn't happen. So I'm going out there to do my thing and the knockout is always a possibility. God willing, everything goes good for me and that happens.

PC: What can the fans tuning into HBO, as well as the ones who bought a seat in Jersey, expect on November 6th from Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero?

RG: Expect me to come out to fight like I always do. I'm going to go out there and put on a good show, let some leather fly, land some great shots and give it my all. It's a nice treat for the east coast; you got two California guys coming out there to win over the fans out there and battle it out, so it's going to be a good fight.

PC: Best of luck to you in November. I appreciate your time. Is there anything you want to say in closing?

RG: I just want to thank all of the fans for supporting me. I want everyone to tune in on November 6th on HBO because it's going to be a great fight. Check it out!
