GLEN JOHNSON: "WE'RE IN IT TO WIN IT...I LOOK FORWARD TO WINNING THE TOURNAMENT"

By Percy Crawford | November 10, 2010
GLEN JOHNSON:

"We were able to go to the super middleweight division and now we're in it to win it...I never thought the punches were illegal shots and they didn't land in an illegal spot. I certainly didn't throw an illegal shot and I don't think it landed in an illegal spot. But again, I gotta go home and watch the fight and I will get a chance to see where the punch landed, but I don't really think it landed in an illegal spot at all...I look forward to winning the tournament," stated former light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson as he talked about his Super Six knockout victory over Allan Green this past Saturday. Check it out!

PC: Congratulations on the big win. How is everything going?

GJ: Thank you very much. Things are going very well. We were able to go to the super middleweight division and now we're in it to win it.

PC: You received a lot of questions going into the fight about your ability to make the weight. It didn't appear to bother you making the weight and obviously you proved that on Saturday.

GJ: I believe in myself. I felt that I could make the weight. I did what I thought I could do and what the commission expected me to do and I made the weight with no problem.

PC: And from the outside looking in, it didn't appear that the weight cut was an issue during the fight either.

GJ: I didn't feel the weight being a problem at all. Everything went good and we prepared really well and just won the fight.

PC: You knew a lot about Allan going into the fight because of some sparring sessions. Did you know he would be susceptible to that overhand right going in or did you pick up on that during the course of the fight?

GJ: It just showed to me in the fight. In sparring, he was a little more careful, but in this situation, he was just giving me the right hand, so I started to take it.

PC: He complained about the shots being on the back of the head. They appeared to be on the ear area to me. I even heard about some ridiculous protest planned to overturn the decision. Did you feel the shots were legit?

GJ: I never thought the punches were illegal shots and they didn't land in an illegal spot. I certainly didn't throw an illegal shot and I don't think it landed in an illegal spot. But again, I gotta go home and watch the fight and I will get a chance to see where the punch landed, but I don't really think it landed in an illegal spot at all.

PC: You hurt him and rocked him a couple rounds before you actually stopped him. Did you see his legs go, or his heart go, to where you knew it was the beginning of the end for him after that?

GJ: I really felt that after I hurt him the first time, that I was able to hurt him and it was just a matter of me landing the right punch again at the right time. I figured I would be able to do it sooner or later, so I was just getting myself in the right position to land that punch.

PC: We don't get tournaments like this often in boxing. You get 3 points right away with the knockout. Is this something that you were looking forward to being a part of?

GJ: I'm extremely proud and happy about this tournament. I think it's a prestigious one and I'm honored to be a part of it. I look forward to winning the tournament.

PC: You are always looked at as the old man in your fights, and definitely in this tournament, and you always defy the odds. What is the key to you hanging with these young cats?

GJ: I think it's the fact that I take care of myself. I train hard and I look forward to competing.

PC: I haven't spoken to anyone in boxing that has a bad thing to say about you. I couldn't think of a more deserving person for the opportunity to jump into this tournament and I wish you the best of luck moving forward. Is there anything you want to say in closing; anybody you want to thank?

GJ: I want to thank Showtime for putting together this tournament. I also want to thank the fans and the media for all of the things that they write and say about me. I want to give a shout out to all of you guys.
