"I'm trying to add to my legacy and show people I am still one of the best fighters out there despite what happened...I beat him to become undisputed welterweight champion. I had the IBF belt and he had the WBA and WBC belts, so hopefully because I would love that fight with Mayorga...Cory Spinks is not dead. I am coming back stronger and meaner and taking on anyone who is willing to take me on. I am coming back to get my world titles back. I want to be the same exciting fighter I used to be. I have rededicated myself and I am more and more hungry and I got to get it," stated former welterweight and jr. middleweight champion Cory Spinks, who's looking to start fresh in a new division as he looks to continue his career in the middleweight division. Check out what else he had to say about his future plans and much more.
EB: How you doing man?
CS: I've been great.
EB: You getting back in the gym?
CS: I'm already back in the gym.
EB: Got a fight coming up? Who you fighting?
CS: Got a fight in February. Not sure who I am fighting; maybe Felix Sturm.
EB: So you're moving up to middleweight?
CS: Yeah, trying to get the title there.
EB: So what happened in your last fight? I know it was not the result you were going for.
CS: Well, you know, my bones started acting up before the fight and I got sick and I couldn't do anything. I couldn't train; I couldn't run. Tried to heal up before the fight, but it got to messing with the muscles and anyone who looked at me could see I had a limp. I couldn't put a lot of pressure on my right leg. But I'm not the one to make excuses. I got in there.
EB: Are you still with Buddy McGirt?
CS: No, I'm not with Buddy. I am looking to work with Jeff Mayweather.
EB: You relocated to Florida, right?
CS: Yeah, I moved down to Juniper. I needed a change of scenery. I got my own gym and I'm working with the kids down here.
EB: So what are your plans for the future of your career?
CS: Yeah, you know, I'm trying to add to my legacy and show people I am still one of the best fighters out there despite what happened.
EB: Are you looking to be more active?
CS: Yeah, definitely, and my manager is on that.
EB: Are you still with Don King?
CS: Yeah, I'm still with Don.
EB: Mayorga is coming back in December. Is that something that is being explored?
CS: Possibly. I beat him to become undisputed welterweight champion. I had the IBF belt and he had the WBA and WBC belts, so hopefully because I would love that fight with Mayorga.
EB: How is your dad [Leon Spinks]?
CS: Man, he is doing wonderful. We trying to get a movie done about him and my uncle [Michael Spinks] called The First Boxing Family. First we are going to work on an autobiography, like they did with Mike Tyson, then work that way.
EB: That's great man. Your family had great success in the boxing game. Since I'm from the St. Louis area, I think that is great.
CS: Yeah, St. Louis has produced the most world champions in boxing history.
EB: I know there is you, your dad, your uncle, and now Devon Alexander.
CS: Yep, and Sonny Liston, Freddie Norwood, Archie Moore; you have like 15 to 16 world champions from St. Louis.
EB: Cool. I will look that up. So is 160 going to be better for you? I know you had weight issues. Will you be able to maintain your quickness?
CS: Much better, and as far as the quickness, that's a granted natural gift. God blessed me with that gift. I only had the one fight at 160 [vs. Jermain Taylor], but I'm filling out now.
EB: How many more years you think you got left?
CS: I got about 4 years left. I don't want to fight until I'm forty. I will fight until I am about 35 or 36.
EB: Well is there anything else you want to say to your fans out there.
CS: Well, I want the fans to know Cory Spinks is not dead. I am coming back stronger and meaner and taking on anyone who is willing to take me on. I am coming back to get my world titles back. I want to be the same exciting fighter I used to be. I have rededicated myself and I am more and more hungry and I got to get it.
EB: Well, appreciate you taking the time to talk.
CS: Thanks man.
