StrikeForce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem has signed for his next cage fight in the United States, and his opponent is no stranger. StrikeForce CEO Scott Coker confirmed this morning Overeem will enter the promotion's 8 Man Heavyweight Tournament against the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu "Fedor Killer" Fabricio Werdum.
The tournament kicks off at The Izod Center in the New Jersey Meadowlands complex on February 12th with Fedor Emelianenko's first fight since his loss to Werdum, as the legendary Russian bad ass steps into the cage against Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.
Overeem fought Werdum for the Pride promotion in Japan on May 5 ,2006, in a fight that saw Werdum defeat Overeem with a Kimura from a bottom guard. Their wild slugfest saw both men at the point of dropping from exhaustion towards the end.
But Overeem is a much different fighter today.
With the possible exception of UNDISPUTED UFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION CAIN VELASQUEZ (who is undergoing surgery this week on a torn rotator cuff suffered during his conquering the Ultimate Fighting heavyweight division with his victory over BROCK LESNAR), Overeem has more momentum than any fighter in the world right now.
In addition to holding the StrikeForce Heavyweight Title, Overeem entered the K-1 World Grand Prix kickboxing tournament and emerged as the champion. Then Overeem crushed Todd Duffee on New Year's Eve for the Dream Title (technically the "Interim Championship," which is strange since there is no championship, and therefore ... well ... you get the picture) with a stunning 19 second 1st round knockout.
