THE CHRONICLES OF MAYWEATHER PT. 3:

"I had already got started in boxing when that teacher called me out to a fist fight. I don't know what his problem was, but for some reason, we butted heads all of the time and he thought he was just going to talk to me however he wanted to. We were in class one day and he ran at me and grabbed me and tried to basically kill me, man. We were on the second or third floor and he ran at me and was trying to shove me out of the window. My sister was in the classroom next to mine and word got to her what was going on. She ran out and hit the teacher in the back of the head with a shoe and that was all of the space I needed...out of all of the time I was locked up, I had two people try me, and they didn't really try me, they just talked shit. Everyone called me Champ when I was in prison. They had a lot of respect for me. I didn't get out until 1997 and Lil Floyd turned pro in '96, so we would watch him on TV in there," stated world-class trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. as he takes a look back to his early years and recalls the foundations of his family's history in the sport. In this unique series, relive tales about members of the Mayweather boxing family and gain insight into the legacy of the first family of boxing. Check it out!

PC: Jeff recently told me that you were the first one in the family to get everyone started in boxing, but more interesting than that, he told me about you beating up a teacher that called you out. Can you remember how that all went down?

FM: Yeah man. I had already got started in boxing when that teacher called me out to a fist fight. She ran out and hit the teacher in the back of the head with a shoe and that was all of the space I needed. Once he let me go and we squared off, I beat the shit out of him. I whooped him pretty bad. I broke his nose and busted his ribs up.

PC: That had to be a crazy situation for you to be tested by one of your teachers like that.

FM: I tell you what, he found out he was messing with the right one to get what he was looking for. I didn't play around, man. I still don't play around, but I try not to have to go there, you know?

PC: What was the end result of you getting into it with your teacher?

FM: They kicked me out of school, but the thing is, when I went to trial before they sent me to prison, he testified on my behalf. He was a witness and told the judge that I was doing good things within the sport of boxing and asked for leniency for me. I never had a problem with him after that. He came to court for me. The judge let me off with time served and I did a couple of my years in a halfway house, so it wasn't too bad. I did go to prison, but it could have been a lot worse for me than what it was.

PC: What was prison life like for you? Did other inmates try you a lot?

FM: Man, you know, out of all of the time I was locked up, I had two people try me, and they didn't really try me, they just talked shit. Everyone called me Champ when I was in prison. They had a lot of respect for me. I didn't get out until 1997 and Lil Floyd turned pro in '96, so we would watch him on TV in there and they knew not to fuck with me. They heard stories about me and then, like I said, watching Lil Floyd do his thing, they never got out of line. But like I said, two guys talked shit. I remember one of them was this little short dude, and I guess he was a weightlifter. I told him, "Trust me, man, you don't want none of this." He went and sat his ass down too. If he wouldn't have, I would still be in there for what I would have done to him. I didn't mess around back then. The other guy, people talked him outta messing with me. They let him know who I was and what I do and he sat his ass down too.

PC: What was the turning point for you Big Floyd? What made you change your mentality and outlook on life?

FM: That life only leads you to two places, man, and I was already in one of them and I didn't want to see the other. You end up in jail or dead living the kind of life I was living and I had been to prison, so you know what the next stop was. I did a complete 180. When you're in that life, there is always someone that wants to replace you and always someone trying to bring you back into that lifestyle. I got out. I had to go back to Michigan for a little while for parole reasons, but once they gave me the okay to move to Las Vegas, it was all about boxing for me. I can really say I turned my life around and changed for the better man. There ain't nobody on this earth that can bring me back to that life I was living. I'm truly blessed and drama free. I don't want trouble with nobody. Life is too short for that shit; believe me.

PC: You have a great story man and it's good to see that life has come full circle for you. Thanks for your time Big Floyd. I can't wait for the book.

FM: Anytime man. I am working on the book as we speak. It will be out soon.
